Default laptop ram question

Hi

im looking to upgrade my laptop and add some more ram]
searching on ebay for some, how do i know which types will fit my laptop or are they all universal.

can anyone point me in the right direction for some further reading?

for starters run a program called cpu-z this gives you info just check mem and speed tabs http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

The laptop manufacturers website would be the first place to look. Second, look at some RAM manufacturers website. Corsair has a section that allows you to put in laptop brand, model, and build, then recommends you a selection of RAM that would meet your needs. is there just a few standard types of ram for laptops?
got a few laptops lying around, was hoping to upgrade them all to sell on ebay

Laptop RAM has almost as many flavors as desktop RAM but the physical size is SO-DIMM (Small Outline-DIMM).

Go to some manfgs website, like Kingston and find a match for each machine.

Here is Corsair's website: Link At the bottom of the page you will find a guide for finding Ram just like the one for Kingston Old Hippie post. A lot of RAM manufactures will have this.
