Default 1000$ build

Budget just went down to 850 +/-!

I just bought a 23.5 ASUS VH236H monitor (basically brand new) off ebay for 155$ shipped. Awesome deal.

This computer will be for gaming. Plan on going either i5, or am3. Dont really care, just the best performance possible for my budget.

Need case, dvd drive, hard drive, mobo, cpu, ram, and power supply.

you don't want to skimp out on a monitor. a cheap monitor will give you awkward colouring and dark spots on the screen itself over time. Either put some more money for a decent brand (Asus, Samsung, BenQ, etc.) or get a 19in monitor, and when you save up money later on, you can get a secon 19in, for a dual monitor setup.

I bought a cheapo viewsonic monitor back in the day and that was the biggest mistake i ever made.

Absolutely. My rig with just one of the hard drives, not including the sound card and 4GB of the RAM, cost me a bit under $1000. And my video card was a little more expensive than the 5850 (albeit preferable for me). And as far as the monitor goes, I'd also try to shy you away from ASUS. A lot of their monitors suffer from flickering and poor gamma. Not all, but a good number. Samsung and Dell are the absolute best, pretty consistently.

4GB Ripjaws - $75
1TB F3 - $85
Antec 300 Illusion (Blue LEDs) Case + Antec 650W - $135 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.265980
Core i5 + Gigabyte P55-UD3R - $310
5850 - $260
Samsung DVD Burner - $25
22" Acer Monitor (not quite as good as Samsung )- $150
...and that should about cover it, totaling a little over $1000.
Only thing is, some of the combo deals have evaporated, and it's hard to get your hands on some of the parts, and some of the parts' prices are at a rare high. Which is why I didn't bother collecting all the links. Also because I'm not using a mouse. But it sounds like you're not in a rush, so know waiting will save you some cash.

Thats not bad.. you know what sucks, is I cant have this rig for a while lol Im going to ask everyone in my family for christmas just for cash, and go out and try to make some money doing odd jobs in the meanwhile (16, no job..) and see how much cash I come up with around new years. Then I can really start looking for parts... hopefully finding some good deals on used stuff.

Just ask again when the time comes, but keep an eye out in case a deal comes up! Around Christmas, don't expect prices to drop. They didn't last year. It's still likely you'll be able to get much more for the money by Q1 2010. 4850's were $270 right when they came out. Imagine what kind of price drops will happen once GT300 happens!
I'm 16 too. The only thing I spend my money on is computer parts though. So basically no job, no car, no money, no life, etc .
