Default 5GB of RAM in Mac Pro??

Hey All

As you can see still kinda new round here and still trying to get my head around RAM so i was just wondering would having 5Gb of RAM (2x2GB 1x1GB) in my mac pro make it run slower than just running say 2x2GB?? or in general on a normal pc would this be not advisable??

If it's able to run 5GB then it shouldn't affect performance at all (noticeably).

4GB is usually enough for the average user, what are you doing on your Mac, if it's video rendering etc then I'd definitely add more RAM.

g skill is all I use. I had corsair in a build and it couldnt hit spec without massive voltage, being as you have a laptop make sure when upgrading you get exactly what the computer is built for and nothing under. Also, be hesitent about getting something over (in mhz) because you cant clock it up if the computer doesnt support it.

Most Mac's require ram to be installed in parity. here is a guide that will show you which DIMM's need to be populated and in which order

Of course, if the Mac isn't 64bit, there's just no point in having more then 4gigs of RAM.

Then you're running the 64bit version of OS 10. It's not some software limit, 32bit can only read 4gigs max.

Only Windows is effected by the 3.5 GB limit. UNIX had fixed this problem years and years ago

Linux

The Linux kernel includes full PAE mode support starting with version 2.3.23,[3] enabling access of up to 64 GiB of memory on 32-bit machines. A PAE-enabled Linux-kernel requires that the CPU also support PAE. As of 2009[citation needed], many common Linux distributions are beginning to use a PAE-enabled kernel as the distribution-specific default[4] because it adds the NX bit [5] .[update]
[edit] Mac OS X

Mac OS X for Intel Macs supports PAE and the NX bit on all CPUs supported by Apple (from 10.4.4—the first Intel release—onwards). Mac Pro and Xserve systems can currently support 32 GiB of RAM, even though the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard kernel remains 32-bit. The Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard kernel can optionally run in 64-bit on certain systems.[6]

Kernel 2.3.23 Came out in 1999

Mac OS X 10.4.4 came out 10 January 2006

Solaris 7 was released November 1998
