My friends comp started to get freeze up and then shut off when playing a game. He could get it to start up and then it stopped working all together. When he booted up he would just get a cursor at the top left and nothing else. I thought it would have been his HDD so he took it out and boot up without it and the same thing happened. I thought he should have gotten a "No OS error" but that didn't occur. So I'm thinking it could be a dead mobo or voltage problems.
Any help?

Did you try booting info safe mode? Could be a registry error too.
Memory can cause all sorts of weird issues too, try running memtest. A loosely seated PCI card or stick of memory can cause issues like this as well. Check IDE/SATA connections too.

Try clearing the CMOS and seeing if it boots up on stock mobo settings.

Nothing pops up except the black cursor at startup. He took out a stick of ram and got a Windows could no start because of an error in the software. please report this problem as : load needed DLLs for kernel error.
He then took out the other stick and put in the one he previously took out and it started up fine and everything.

Something could be shorting out, but i dont know really. Also, could it be a PSU problem? If it was one of the 2 above i would have thought it would have turned off sooner than 5 minutes but its worth trying the psu in a different PC. Try testing with the minimum hardware possible, and maybe caseless (like cpu, mobo, 1 stick of ram), and see if that works or not. If you get the same problem with minimum hardware and no case, it looks like your mobo or PSU most likely.
Also, what are you CPU and GPU temps? Worth checking those out too... there isn't any wires or anything caught in your GPU fan is there, i had that problem once, and took me ages to finally figure it out i had something stuck in there. Now my cables are much tidier though ![]() Hope you solve it

im just very confused overall, if its not one thing its the next, could it be my mobo is frying my ram, hince why it works for a bit then stops and the time it runs gets shorter and shorter. it could be my power supply but i highly doubt it, im my mind its the mobo, i just want a for sure answer on what it is, before i go and pay a ton of money to get it fixed or buy the part. please any other ideas
also it couldnt be my psu could it, for the fact that changing the ram changed the symptoms , could possibly be the mobo or ram if thats the case
