I went to a LAN over the weekend, and they had an overclocking competition. It wasn't very big, only a few people participated, and they only broke it down into two categories: Air and Water cooling.

I had a 46.3% overclock on my Q6600, it was the highest I could get stable (we had to run OCCT for 30 minutes). My closest competition was someone with an E6x00 (can't remember exactly). I thought I had it won, and I was so excited for a second because the price was an motherboard (I'm not sure which model exactly, it was some sort of i7 board though).

Then out of nowhere, a guy with an i7 920 decided to enter and easily got a 54% overclock. I was pissed because that same guy had won an i7 cpu the previous day. He already had an i7 rig, and now he has a motherboard and cpu towards a second i7 rig. Some people have all the luck. He did say he was planning on using the board and cpu in a build for his friend, which is good, better than him just selling it for a profit, but I'm still disappointed I didn't win.

Anyway, the next time around I plan to win. I know there are chips out there that could have easily won me this contest since they were basing it on overclock percentage alone. What should I buy to ensure that I win next time? I used to have a LAN rig with an E2140, and I got that thing clocked pretty high, but I've heard good things about the E2160s too. I'm going to be watching the b/s/t here for a good chip, what do you guys recommend I look out for?

Edit: Must be a 775 chip, I don't have money to spent on a whole new rig.

Very weird competition, they were allowing different CPUs vs different CPUs? Core2 Quad vs i7 and it would matter if the i7 or the C2Q was on water and the other on air?

Yup. The only two categories were air and water.

The best chip to get would be a Celeron 220.

It's stock speeds are 1.2GHz, 533FSB, 9x Multi. 3GHz is stupid easy with it, which comes out to a 166% overclock.

Maybe look into an E2200,I had one before and got a 50% (2.2-3.2) overclock on the stock cooler with a realtivly safe amount of volts (around 1.38 IIRC)

No in all seriousness i would get that chip as backup for the event...i would find something that you could do a 70-80% overclock on so as to not draw attention at how flawed there system is...
