Alright, me again. I've decided to give up on an Intel Core i5 build and go with the Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition (on the chance that I can unlock another core and get 90% the performance of the i5 if I'm lucky enough to get a working 4th core
)What I'm using the computer for: Gaming, heavy multitasking, light movie editing and Photoshop. Budget: $520 for total, but I'm using $58.98 of that on a new set of speakers and earphones, so only $455 will be dedicated to the build. Parts I'm reusing: EVGA GeForce GTX 260 C216 (bought from Lord Xeb ), CM690, optical drives, CM Hyper N520 HSFMy tentative parts list: Processor: AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE - $199.99 Combo with RAM RAM: OCZ Gold 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 - $199.99 Combo with CPU Motherboard: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO - $99.99 HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM with a 2.5" HDD Enclosure - $62.49 Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W - $74.99 Speakers and Earphones - $58.98 Total: $496.44 + $12.46 (S&H) = $508.90 Should I change/add anything to my build? Should I go for the Athlon II X4 620 Propus for a guaranteed quad-core processor without an L3 cache, or stick with the unlocked multiplier tri-core Heka (and hope for a working fourth core)? I have no idea when the 720s will run out of stock (I think they were discontinued?) so I'm not sure if I should order now or not. |

I like that build, wouldn't change anything. You do know you won't be able to use the enclosure on the hard drive, though, right?

Yeah, I'm using it to transfer some stuff from my laptop hard drive. I figure I'd spend the $2.50 and transfer everything quickly rather than doing everything with my network and USB1.1 flash drives.

Oh and 720BE is better then the quad Athlon in most test, gaming especially. Honestly, for 80$ more though, The i5 will rape anything on the AMD line. (I'm not a fanboy, its just a fact) Also, if you live near a microcenter you can get a i7 920 for 200$ or a i5 750 for like 150$? At least, what people have told me.
