Default Phenom II 965be oc help...

Alright guys, I am at my wit's end here. I will preface everything I am saying with the fact that I am new to overclocking. I have been doing a lot of research online, books, mags etc. to figure this oc stuff out. I just built a solid rig (I think). HAF932 case, the above processor, Crosshair III mobo, Thermaltake V1 hsf, af5 thermal paste. Stock I am idling at 30c, full load 48c. I am now running 3.6ghz (multiplier at 18), idle at 32c, load at 52c (prime95). The problem lies when I do ANYTHING to get above 3.6ghz. I feel like I have tried every combination known to man but can only get a max of about 15 mins on prime95 using small fft's. I see all these people using air running close to 1.5v, but if I run anything over 1.46v my cpu jumps up to 59-60c and I'm just not comfortable there. I have gone up on multiplier and down on fsb, vice versa...I have upped voltage on cpu/nb, nb, ht...I have adjust ht and nb link manually and left on auto. Just getting frustrated. Any options that I am just completely overlooking? I have done the slow baby steps of going up a half multiplier, then adjusting voltage slowly...but still can't go far in prime95. When I do start to last a little longer on prime I have to shut it down b/c of temps. l know for some of you experts, this probably sounds dumb but I really feel like I put together a good machine and would like to push it and see what it will do. Oh yea, I'm running g.skill trident 4 gigs ddr3 ram overclocked to 1600mhz right now on 1.64v. I have also tried underclocking ram to get better results, but still nothing.

I really appreciate any help in advance. Any avenues that I'm just complettely missing here?

Alan

wow very weird and sorry to jump in, i am having the same prob, and have got an asus crosshair formula III and a 965 be. I have also tried everything and can not get past the 3.6/7 mark without it being unstable and have tried everything and read everything i can find my ram isnt even running at 1600mhz and still no joy (ow and can i ask what settings you used to get the ram running at 1600 plz) , i am going to install a wc system to see if that helps in regards to temp, but sorry i am a noob aswell so dont really have any advice but i am sure there will be some wiser people about soon lets hope there a solution

9-9-9-24 1.65v

I feel pathetic at 3.6Ghz with this machine...lol. I upped the multiplier to 18 @ 1.41v overnight (8hours) in prime95 with no probs. Full load at 51c, core temps at 57. I think I could have gotten away with less voltage. I am going to go slooooow this weekend and be patient. I would be happy with 3.8-3.9ghz. It's frustrating but fun...I feel like a sponge right now just taking in any and all advice from anyone who wants to lend a hand. I figure even the best started out where you and I are right now. I'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

I'm guessing b/c I was all over the place in my first post...that's what's keeping ppl away. I'm going to spend all my day Sunday and I WILL hit 3.9Ghz stable under Prime95...haha. I got about an hour stable on 3.7Ghz last night. My problem now is ht and nb frequency...leave it on auto or what multi? Maybe we are just the blind leading the blind on this thread...lol. Oh well, if you hit on any setup that works, let me know being that we have a similar mobo/cpu setup. I'll do the same.

Ok before you can do anything, you have to get rid of your heatsink. It is not designed to handle a overclocked quad. If you want to oc that cpu to anything respectable, your gonna have to spend some money. There are 2 types of 965's. 145 watt and the 125watt. Either way you need a good 6 pipe 120mm tower heatsink. Like a Megahalem http://www.crazypc.com/products/prol...em-508600.html
Or a TRUE http://www.coolerguys.com/840556069577.html
Or if your on a budget http://www.coolerguys.com/840556088660.html

But that V1 of yours will not get the job done.

You guys are kinda in the wrong section. You can ask a mod to move the thread, but I will help you here. Your memory is holding you back. I have the same problem with Tridents. Basically, we are a bit stuck.

The new C3 stepping is suppose to increase IMC (internal memory controller on CPU) compatibility with different IC (internal controller) brands. The friendliest IC to work with Phenom II DDR3 is Elpida Hyper's and they are the most expensive ones. And a Hyper is almost guaranteed when you get the DDR3 2000 memory with low volts and really tight timings. Earlier DDR3 1600 CL7 OCZ were Elpida Hyper. Right now many brands are using Samsung, Elpida BBSE, and Hynix.

Take a look at www.xtremesystems.org/forums and go to there xtreme bandwidth page. You can find some IC information throughout the posts. My modules are doing 1400 6-7-6-19 at 1.6v with some DRAM REF tweaks. You can push some DRAM REF voltages to get a tighter timing.

Also, ignore spd settings as they are for JEDEC and Intel XMP. AMD won't do those and JEDEC spd's are seriously slow. There are BEMP (Black Edition Memory Profile), but most boards don't support it. The best bet is to try to hit advertised rated settings.
