Question. What's TOE?

Second question: In point of fact right now the webserver is directly connected through a 10/100 Linksys switch to the cable modem. (Yes, the Windows XP firewall is turned on. Yes, I also know it's not ideal, yadda yadda. I make sure it grabs the security updates, though.)

So per your recommendation how would I configure DD-WRT to painlessly handle passing data to my web server? I have a WRT54GL I specifically bought for the purpose. Currently it handles my wireless + my roomie's computer.

TOE is TCP Offload Engine, where the card does all the work instead of the CPU. Its great for when you have persistent connections (like between your desktop and a file server), but for really quick connections like with a Web server the overhead of creating and destroying the connection will use more CPU cycles than if you just didn't use it.

And all you need to do with your router is use port forwarding, and make sure it's got a nice chunk of memory for NAT tables

I had been meaning to ask about motherboards with SATA RAID capability. The free RAID controller hasn't materialized and I don't expect it to at this point, so what sorts of motherboards can you point me to, AMD and Intel wise, that have this feature? I discussed this once before on the forum and at the time, AMD motherboard RAIDs were not consdered very reliable. I'd like to revisit that and see if things have improved any.

They are very reliable, they just have a limit to their bandwidth (about 600MB/s for the ICH10R) and suck with RAID5 write speed. Just search through newegg, you can filter the boards by RAID capabilities.

The RAID I have right now is RAID 1, so I just mirror everything. The redundancy is more important to me than the speed. So if I were to go SATA RAID it would also be RAID 1.

But I am considering the possibility of just dropping personal hosting in favor of going to an external host. The question of physical access to the server versus paying for people who know their security very well is something I will have to consider.
