A general question for you guys. I have been obsessed with oc'ing my computer, but have been pulling my hair out b/c it will not run stable on Prime95 for more than 15-20 mins. However I can play any game I want without crashing for as long as I want and temps never get over 38-40c. My idle temps stay between 30-32c. Now, my question is...would my prime95 fail be a concern for you guys or would the fact that I can play my games with no heat/crash issues be enough not to worry you and feel you have a solid oc? I understand about feeling great by running Prime95 for days without a crash, but the point in building my system was to be able to play games and it does that wonderfully.

What is your current oc & voltage?I personally would want my oc to be stable, data corruption/loss among other things can go wrong when a system is unstable.

A solid OC is a stable OC, and failing any tests disqualify itself. Was your Prime95 under blend or small FFT?

Welcome to overclock.net. Whats your OCing speed? Do you OC at all?

It's not a stable OC. You need to do some fine tuning. Run each test for 12 hours for stability. Start with
small ftt's this is for CPU Large is for ram and blend is for both together. This will tell you what needs to be adjusted.

failing prime means your computer isn't 100% rock stable. However, no real world program or use will ever come close to prime95 in terms of cpu usage. That being said, if you can game and video encode without errors or crashes, then you'll probably be fine. But there is always that .001% chance that during normal workload, your cpu might freeze or blue screen. Its a matter of personal preference... i personlay won't run my computer unless it can pass a minimum of 6 hours small ffts prime.

you always want to be 100% stable. if you are not then what is happening is there are loose electrons jumping around your cpu. every time that happens a small amount of material is transferred from where it was to a new spot in the curcuit. over time that will build up and cause your CPU to short out and be dead for good.
if you are not 100% stable you are cutting your CPU lifespan by many years. being unstable will kill your cpu long before running it too hot. edit: man people swarmed to this thread...

I've noticed that even 3dmark (06 and Vantage) do not stress a CPU in terms of absolute temperature compared to Prime95. That said the GPU and CPU can sometimes together create enough heat to crash a system that otherwise works fine with either operating independently. (But caveat: Case ventilation can often mask/eliminate this effect.)
And yes, the nature of the Prime95 test is important. Small FFTs or Maximum tend to stress the CPU without RAM playing a big role. Blend will bring the RAM into play and crashes or errors here indicate a possible memory problem. In point of fact this happened to me and required me to back off my RAM to 1333 7-7-7-21, which made me a saaaaaaaaaad panda.
