Intel Overclocker

So I am currently running a laptop that is a few years old, and want to build a new rig for myself. Problem is I am completely broke. I plan on saving up money over the next few months to be able to put something together, but was wondering what the best way to go about this was. Do you guys suggest just saving up all my money to buy everything at once, or buy each piece as funds become available? If you think the one at a time approach is the way to go, is there any specific items I should get first?
Also, I was wondering what a good goal would be to have in mind for my build price wise. I want something that is decent, but doesn't have to be able to run the newest games maxed out, just a good overall performer. I already have a monitor and OS, so what do you think I should be aiming for? I was hoping like $500-$600. Does this sound doable? Thanks a lot.
