I'm getting a new server soon and thought that I could use it for folding when it's not doing anything important on the weekends. My question is, would it be better to get 2 Nehalem Xeons (E5520) or one higher clocked Xeon (such as the Xeon X5560)? Would you even recommend folding with a dual CPU setup?

There is a special smp beta folding client meant for systems with 8+ physical cores that is supposed to have a large ppd reward compared to the regular smp client. Of course you could run multiple instances of the regular SMP client instead. For strictly folding I would go with a dual socket setup, but the choice is up to you and really depends on whether or not you will be able to make use of 8 physical cores for your server applications.

I think I've decide to go with a dual socket setup to serve my application needs. I will try the beta smp client as soon as I have it set up. Thanks for your help, jpz! +rep
