I have a noob question, you'll answer it easily. If I buy a new CPU, is thermal paste given with the CPU?

Depends. If you buy a CPU with a heatsink, it will come pre-applied on the heatsink. You should probably invest in some of your own though. I never trust stock-applied stuff.

uhm.. the thermal paste is applied via heatsink so if its OEM it doesnt come with a heatsink thus no thermalpaste

So if I buy a box version of Core i7 860, only then will I get thermal paste for the stock heatsink?

Last time I bought an Intel Box (@ 1 yr. ago) the paste was already on the HS.

Thermal paste comes on the heatsink, not the CPU itself.
Go pick up some other thermal paste from NewEgg. My personal favorite is AS5, and everyone I talk to raves about it. But there's newer stuff out there, and AS5 is fairly old. But it works wonders! Try for aftermarket heatsinks as well if you're going to be overclocking.

It comes pre-applied on the heatsink, but I'd spend a few bucks on a syringe of aftermarket paste. You'll see a large drop in temps, as stock paste is generally crap.

No, but as everyone has said, if you buy a retail box w/ a heatsink it will come with paste already applied. People choose thermal paste like they choose processors. Everyone prefers something different. I have noticed that a lot of people use OCZ freeze, so if you are planning on buying a new processor you can invest in this as well for about $6 (US).

Well how about this question then, if he were to go out and get his own thermal paste, what's a good brand to get? For Intel and AMD.
