Indeed the i5 is much better than AM3 and more economical, for instance ASRock do a very good low priced P55 that will fit a 775 cooler so you can in fact under cut AMD economics with an i5.

It seems that while Intel is going for pre-set performance, they make CPUs that operate incredibly fast at stock levels, AMD is set on creating cores soley for the purpose of overclocking.

That's how I see it at least.

If I were in your shoes and simply wanted to update your sig rig, I'd buy a used socket 775 quad like a q9x50 ($170ish) and a new ATI 4890 video card ($175ish).

While development on new socket 775 CPUs and motherboards has faded, the performance is still up to par and completely viable for any tasks that you want to do (except for give you the highest benchmark scores and a giant e-peen )

Not from what I've seen.. the i5 750 CPU is about 35$ more than a 955, and the AM3 boards are alot cheaper too.

And to whoever didnt like my post above, Im just going off of what I've read on this site. Many people have said that, I dunno why either.

I payed $199.00 for my M4A79-T deluxe on newegg brand new.

And I payed $180.00 for my 955 on newegg brand new.

For my I5 setup I payed. $185.00 for my P55 board brand new.

And will be paying $150.00 for the I5 750 at micro center brand new.

So basically I5 is/was cheaper for me.

It's true that a phenom II system would be cheaper to buy here in canada than a core i5 system would. We don't quite get the same specials as you guys.

I'll post example builds.

Wait for next year to upgrade. Nvidia 300GT and intels 32nm i9 are coming. And even if you don't get those every thing will be cheaper with their release.
