Default Which path for upgrades? intel or AMD?

Now, I was originally just going to buy a new i5 build but then I thought about it. I really don't want to get an i5, only to have to upgrade to i7 for those new 8core CPUs that are supposed to be coming out.

I'm intending to go quad core but I also want to be able to upgrade without having to buy all new mobo ram and cpu in a year. I know there are alot of fanboys on here that just love your new i7 920s but I want a real down to earth opinion. I'm not just thinking about this year but down the road too.

Having the the fastest computer is awesome but paying $300+ dollars for 30 seconds less unraring a 1gb file would just be retarded for me. I like doing video conversion since I use my computer on my tv and like converting videos for my blackberry and my wifes HTC Dream. I do some gaming and I will be upgrading my videocard too but this thread isn't about that.

So which path should I go? i7, AM3 or stick with 775 a bit longer and see what happens.

AM3 (and possibly AM3+) along with 1156 and 1336 with all be around for quite a long time. It's personal preference, really. I would probably go with AMD, just because of cost. I wouldn't sink anymore money into the 775, though.

From what I've read, 1156 wont be around very long. 1336 will last longer because of the 8 core cpu (i9?) coming out for it.

Im going AM3, as the 6 core CPU theyre coming out with will be compatible with AM3 which means no new mobo/cpu/ram..

I would go 1336. For their future processors, AMD will go AM3r (weird name for what is essentially AM3+) but then they will have to switch to some type of LGA. So yeah, 1156 or 1336, but I'd go with QPI link in 1336 for sure.

budget?

for me it'd be i7.

i like AMD and it's cheap and upgradeable, but then again, intel's i5 and i7 have faster clock for clock, and higher average OC's (2.66 -> 4ghz for intel, compared to 3 -> 3.6 for AMD). but then the thing about i5 that irritates me to no end is that x8 x8 PCIe lane thing, sure it's no biggie now, but next gen? and after that? so... i7.

I'm not so worried about short term budget as I am about long term. Thanks for your perspective.

AM3 socket should be around to atleast 2012 probably the same for 1336 but when you start thinking of prices of motherboards and chips the clear winner is AMD specially for gaming and part time video creation.

The skt 1156 is set to replace skt 775 as the mainstream platform; we used to have Intel 975, P35, p45 which were the mainstream platforms with x38 & x48 as extreme, enthusiast platforms so now we still have the mainstream platform which is P55 and the extreme Enthusiast which is x58 so all theyve done is put each platform on its own separate socket.
The extreme enthusiast market is very expensive and will support expensive processors like i7 and i9 and although some enthusiasts will prolly buy i9 platforms they will be aimed at workstations and systems that demand a lot of processing like busy servers. Most extreme gamers and enthusiasts will still go for i7 on the x58 platform but the largest market will still be the mainstream market on the 1156 platform with i3, i5 & i7 for ppl that dont have money to burn.

So Ktmrida4life i would like to see a link to some of this stuff youve been reading that has written off skt 1156 before its even started.

Yea I dont get why everyone says "I5 wont last long" No one has any proof of that. It will last as long as 1366 for people like me who cant afford I7.

If you are going to get an i7 go Intel. If you are getting the i5 750, then just go AM3. The performance difference just isn't worth the price difference.
