Default Single gfx card setup

If you only planned on running a single gfx card which cpu would you go with i5 or AMD?

Depends on your budget and what you will use the PC for.

Assuming you are referring to an AMD 955 or 965, gaming wise the performance difference is minute between an i5, with the i5 having a slight edge. You can get a 955 for cheaper, thus giving you a better price-performance ratio.

i5, especially since I wouldn't need to deal with splitting PCI lanes in half then

You mean i5 vs. Phenom II? It's a hard call to make, but I think I'd go with an i5.

AMD because of the price... and I don't use my PC for much besides gaming and design. I would probably spend the saved money on other small goodies for my rig.

...BUT if $$$ was no issue and cost did not matter, I would probably get an I5 or I7 just because.. why not?

Depends on the intended uses for your rig. But to tell you quite honestly, either CPU will work great. AMD just released the C3 stepping which I think is really going to make a difference in the AMD community as this stepping allows for considerably higher clock, like 4.2 GHz on air and the revised memory controller allows for higher frequencies and tighter timings. I think the slight lead i5 had is going to go away.

The price difference, between i5 and AM3 cpu's and motherboards in minimum so I would go with the best performance for my buck. How ever slight that might be,I say go i5.
