Default New PC Build (need some reassurance)

I am piecing together a new build and just want some peace of mind about the parts I am choosing. I've done quite a bit of research as this will only be my third build, but it has been about 4 years since my last. Here is what I have so far.

CPU: Phenom II X4 955 ($175) or 965 ($195)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX ($80)
RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ($96)
GPU: XFX HD-487A-ZWFC Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 ($155)
PSU: OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W ATX12V / EPS12V ($65)
CPU cooling: Scythe SCKTN-3000 92mm Sleeve "KATANA3" ($29)
Case: COOLER MASTER Elite RC-310-BWN1-GP ($40)
Case cooling: 3x 120mm Scythe DFS122512L-PWM ($30)
Hard Drive: WD 750GB Caviar Black ($70)
Total Build Cost: $740

I plan to overclock either processor to at least 3.8GHz. Suggestions are welcome.

welcome to OCN,
I would say go with the 965, it is a newer chip and currently AMD's flagship CPU. You may want to send a user on this website called El_Gappo, he has a 965 @ 4.3 i believe, talk to him abuot the board and CPU

Go with the 955 instead. If you're going to be overclocking, both chips max out at around the same speed. Also, for 6 bucks more, you can get the mighty Mugen 2, which should get you to 3.8ghz easily. Everything else in your rig should work beautifully together, and you'll be very happy with it.

Oh and enjoy your stay at Ocn.

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for the welcome. I'll look into the Mugen (just hope it fits in my case ). I look forward to my stay here at Overclock.net

welcome

i'd switch out the CPU to a 965 if budget permits.

that said, i'd also try swapping that Case and PSU combo to the Antec Earthwatts 650W and Antec Three Hundred

also look to get a board that supports more than 1 card - it'll be handy down the line

also look at getting a 5770 instead. it has DX11 and is better with power consumption while being about on par with the 4870 you picked. you could also bag a 4890 on here for around $165 if you don't mind going used and want ~20% more performance
