I was thinking...instead of using a pencil to shade directly onto the reisitor, take a bit of paper, shade it heavily, then tape the paper onto the resistor. wouldnt that allow more elecrtical conductivity?

No, that doesn't sound like a good idea. It would be much easier and safer to shade on the board itself.

You can only "shade" surface resistors. Also, its important that there is reliable contact, so you can properly estimate the resistance at any given time. That would probably be super hard with paper taped on.
