get an oscilloscope!, but that kind of money is not worth it for simple modders, and if you can get an oscilloscope at a very good price, its very rare you'll come by it.

i personally prefer fluke multimeters, but what do i know, im only an electrical engineer,...

but im sure what ever multimeter you can get your hands on will do you more than good

You can get mulitmeters that range from US$9.99 to US$299...

Frankly, a 9.99 will do the job just fine. As MADMAX22 previously stated, RadioShack carries a few.

The benefit to paying US$50.00 for a multi-meter is that there are some additional useful features such as temperature probe.

As Pook said, if this is your first time soldering, then practice.

a basic radioshack/craftsman meter can do just about everything you need... if you want precision and don't want to buy another meter... go with Fluke.

Get a meter with a digital readout... auto-ranging is nice, but not a necessity... GET A METER WITH BANANA JACKS.

if you get a meter with banana jacks you have an option for real test leads... and different high-quality leads... don't get one with just straight pins...


you can make your own variable soldering iron with a simple 300 watt dimmer... and a cheap craftsman 45w... the nice craftsman even comes with a few tips... including a fine one.

PRACTICE before you actually do it on your mobo...

ok... so... is the $50 Radio Shack iteration the best deal for one with a temp probe? cause it's been killing me not to know my dang NB temp!

I think you guys missed one thing... I am probably going to do the pencil mod myself (Vdroop elimination)... but, I am hoping to find a good shop where I can get a guy with steady hands and years of minute soldering under his belt to do the actual soldering for the crazy mod that allows my board to go awol with FSBs on bod Duos and Quads... (anyone in the LA area that knows of such a shop?)

This is similar to the multimeter that I use... but you can do better than that on the pricing. If you play your cards right, you could probably shave another 20 bucks off.

Bear in mind that the probe will only work to measure surface temperatures of items. I generally use the temp feature for ambient (internal and external) temps, as well as exhaust temps....

If you do go to someone esle to do the soldering, I would be careful in your selection process and try and have the work done while you wait.... this will most likely iritate the person to no end... but it's your baby, right?

Also, A jeweller has the skills to do what you want. The medium is different, but they are good when it comes to working with small jobs.

Great thing, and you can get different tips for it for different purposes.

The thing with multi meters is that if you try and measure current with them then they usually can't handle it, but if you're just emasuring volts then it should be fine.

not to be rude... but i've had a few butane irons in the past... never had one that worked anywhere near as well as a simple corded one... you don't need to get some monster iron...



check out the SL-5-40 Soldering Station Complete 30 bucks... and you can get a conical tip for 2.50...


a basic multi-meter should be able to handle 10A... with the better ones going up to and beyond 60A

That link has a great price for that meter. That`s an awesome price for an AC/DC ammeter, and next to Fluke, Amprobe is best. A Fluke that does all the Amprobe can do would cost nearly $300.
