A pencil mod is a volt mod using the lead from a pencil... I think it's a really ad-hoc and careless way to try to v-mod, not to mention it is not permanent.
Take a look here, but I wouldn't do this in a million years: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/...voltmods/101/2

If you're not confident with your soldering skills or don't want to make permanent mods to your parts then pencil modding is the way to go. There's nothing ad-hoc or careless about it unless you fail to follow proper precautions, and anything done is usually easily reversible by just removing the pencil shading.
You'd probably want some aftermarket cooling if you v-mod a GPU, and be sure to keep an eye on temps.

The pencil leaves a lead residue behind which lowers the resistance of the target resistor. This type of pencil mod is used for vdroop a lot of times.

VR-Zone is where most of the voltage mods come from. I would head over to their webpage and look around.
