Soldering Question - Overclock.net

Sorry for being a noob but still learning as I go.
Does it matter what type of solder I use for volt mod or any computer component related soldering? Can I just pick up a cheap solder in my local hardware store? Thanks

generally anything will do jsut fine... I go with the thinner, with 4% silver content and Aggressive rosin flux... for better flow... but thats just personal preference... and I do a lot of audio mods as well...

radio shack rosin core solder will do the job...

Make sure it has rosin flux and not acid flux (used for soldering copper pipes and such), or it will corrode.

Silver solder is better, but for what you're doing pretty much anything will work. And like radeon said, no acid flux.

for electronics you want your soldering iron at 750 degrees celcius and solder thats 40% tin 50% copper with a rosin core is wat i used in my computer building

15watt iron for electronics... anything higher is for other applications. And no soldering guns, those are garbage for small electronics work.

Well for SMT/SMD, it's 600-650*F, but that's what i learned :/

Yes, thats right. Not sure what the dude a couple posts up is talking about with 750*C, that will lift a trace/pad off a board because its wayyyyyy too much heat. Solder usually melts around the 180-250*C range, which is like 400*F or something.

To the OP, go to radioshack and get either the adjustable wattage soldering iron.. should see it. Its pretty small and the switch will let you select between 15W and 30W. Also get some thin silver bearing solder, as it works pretty good.
