What is the purpose of an OVP mod on a GFX card and how would you use it in combination with a vGPU mod?

OVP stands for Over Voltage Protection, and is used to prevent too much voltage going to the GPU core, and prevents it from toasting the core (instead it just shuts off the card).
For example if I want max clocks from an 8800GT I can apply something like 1.59 volts, and if I want to apply +1.6 volts, then I would have to do an OVP mod to prevent the controller from shutting the core off.

OVP mods are typically for high-end water cooled setups or extreme cooling scenario's for max GPU clocks and voltage.
**trueg50 hit it, with his posted explanation.
