definitely true, but what's the use of playing at 60fps if it drops when you need it most? maybe i'm just getting snobbish after so many years of gaming on integrated gfx...

edit- not sure if i'm being an ass by posting this, new to this forum so don't hesitate to tell me.

Good write up and much in agreement. You may want to make a note of average and minimum FPS. That you do want a buffer of over 60FPS but you don't need 200FPS. rep for you.

You're indeed right about the minimum FPS. In actuality minimum FPS IS THE ONLY thing that matters. If you've got a rig that does INFINITY FPS at every point but when you see more than one person, 4 walls and a bush it drops to 7 FPS... it's kind of worthless. I think I'll add that on later as I wrote that over 2 straight hours and am... quite tired of writing.

Also, there are game settings that make it hard on the CPU as well. Oblivion is a game that's ripe to make this write up look bad as it's also very simplistic and doesn't take into account RAM size/speed and doesn't take into account how every game is more or less rendered differently and is less or more efficiently coded as certain resolutions and what not than other. There are a MILLION little things and quirks that can make this not work for you. But the main point stand uncontested. If you've got a CPU that can play your games as they are now at good framerates, DON'T DICK AROUND WITH A CONROE. Spend your money on a bad ass monitor.

When you're in a FPS room with 30 people in it along with 5 vehicles and 20 NPCs, you're going to have a major CPU/ram draw as the physics and AI are working overtime. These are tiny niche exceptions to the rule.
I felt what I said needed to be stated as I have seen a lot of users on the forum with systems with processors equal to or worse than mine saying the are thinking about buying a really powerful video card in order to play all of the latest games. I understand that you spent a lot of time writing this up. I am not trying to invalidate what you said. Just add to it in order that people don't make mistakes in what hardware they choose and what information that they diseminate.

Not quite... (I'm doing this to mess with you)... Humans need at least 30FPS to see smooth movement. You should be able to notice fluctuations if they occur 40-60FPS which may bother some people. However, this is a minor issue. If this was occurring... lower your eye candy or overclock some more! Go rest and edit later. good job.

I'm guessing this is based around actual usage and not around benchmarks? If so, spot on

Correct me if I'm wrong, but dont many LCD monitors support refresh rates of 75 Hz? (although you may have to force your monitor to do so by right clicking on your desktop > settings > advanced > monitor tab and bringing your refresh rate up to the max supported Hz for your monitor.)

Good write up.

Some do at lower res and a select few do at native. Logic still applies the same though.

Very few do at their max resolutions. Usually the ones that do are 12x10 and for all intents and purposes non-existent for this general rule.
