Well, I got a little frisky and decided to run some tests on Lost Coast on my sig rig. All on 4-4-4-12 and same other timings not specified here.
E6600 @ 3.55Ghz DDR788 X1900XTX @ 650/775 (Stock clocks) ![]() E6600 @ 3.55Ghz DDR788 X1900XTX @ 766/864 ![]() E6600 @ 2.4Ghz (Stock clocks) DDR800 X1900XTX @ 766/864 ![]() E6600 @ 2.4GHz (Stock clocks) DDR800 X1900XTX @ 650/775 ![]() Results For E6600 + X1900XTX ![]() For X-2 4200+ + 8800GTX ![]() In conclusion, the source engine doesn't give a rat's ass about processor speed given a combination such as this. It's very clear that running this game on an OCed AMD chip is fully 'doable' without a significant CPU bottleneck so long as you keep your resolution at 12x10 or above with all the eye candy on. Keep in mind, a 1900XTX at clocks like 766 is fairly comparable to that of a base, stock clocked 8800GTS 320MB. As you go up in resolution, though, it makes even LESS sense to be buying more than a Brisbane CPU (unless money is no object or you frequently do other CPU heavy tasks then by all means go Conroe or better) as the GPU bottleneck gets bigger and bigger. THOUGH, the point at which a bottleneck in either direction ceases to matter on LCDs over 12x10 is exactly 60FPS as that's the absolute max that LCDs can display. (More on this in my sig link regarding bottlenecks.) Some people might question the fact that an X1900XTX is simply not enough to emulate an 8800 series GPU in a situation such as this and your findings don't mean very much. Indeed this is a possibility. In the next section of the test I'll be testing on the 12x10 resolution at which the 1900XTX is MORE THAN ENOUGH to challenge the 8800 series'/2900 prowess in 16x12 and we'll see more clearly if this holds true for the next gen cards.

Hmmm
Seems good. However remember each game is different is whats the right CPU/GPU performance ![]()

Nice Easty, how about one with your GPU clocked down to stock and.... well, copy mine.
Quote:
That being said, running at 10x7 all eye candy on in FEAR benchmarks the difference between stock and 3.8Ghz is a paltry 8FPS (126 versus 131) on my current set up. That sugegsts the Source is a very CPU sensitive game compared to FEAR.

1600x1200 didn't work for some reason and so had to use 1600x900:
