Default Best pci(not pci-e) video card to get?

I know this dude who is refusing to change anything except he wants to change his vid. card. What does everyone think would be a good upgrade from his 5500? He wants to be able to play cod4 when it comes out but I told him that thats a tall order for a plain pci card. All recomendations welcome!

Thanks

CoD4 on a PCI card I think may be near impossible. Don't take my word for it tho.

I'd have to agree with that.

This X1550 256mb is probably the one of the fastest PCI cards available. But don't expect to play newer games with it (at least not very smoothly). Even with a decent CPU, newer/higher end games are likely to lag at anything more than low graphic settings.

With respect to what IW was running and what he thinks will be needed for CoD4, {PST} Joker of eXtreme+ said this:

"...they (IW) were running DX9 and it (CoD4) was running fluidly. Ya, your going to have to upgrade...if you're running a low end PCI Express or a high end AGP your going to have to go to a mediocre to a high end PCI. You're going to have to have a good amount of memory, I would imagine at least a gig. The new AMD2 and Intel Core2Duo's are almost going to be a staple in order to play this I would think."

Makaveli is right. You could go with the 6200 NVIDIA or if your buddy wants the Radeon 9250. Thats about as good as you will get with PCI.

COD 4 will not work though sorry

i have a 9250 sitting in my old pc... that was one of the better pci cards when i got it. i think everyone was moving to pci-e when i got it. was better then then the on board graphics from my old p4 setup. but i doubt it will run any "newer" game now adays. he may have to pay a few hundred and get a budget system started, gut his old system and upgrade his cpu mobo and ram... then he can get a decent card... check the for sale section too. lots of people upgrading to dx10 should be able to find a 6800 or higher for cheap. just my $.02

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have been trying to tell him that he HAS to upgrade for cod4 but I'm not sure if he understands that or not... I told him that even the 1550 is gonna be around a 100 bucks and he could upgrade to a mobo like mine for 50 and get the 8600gt for 110 and be way better off! But I guess we'll see... Thanks again!!

The X1550 and 6200 are the best PCI card available but i highly reccommend the 9250, its a good card that can run World in Conflict at the lowest setting possible and still get good framerates. Its probably 50 bucks at the Egg.
