another question.. in reading some of the reviews for 1950 series cards i saw something mentioned about using crt monitors. that an adapter is needed because the card has been designed for flat panels. and doing so incurs a hit on performance.

knowing that this is for a crt monitor, does anyone have any different advice on which card to shoot for? at which model/series number did this adapter requirement appear?

The interface on the card is DVI. The ATI version of the card (and most other brands) comes with the DVI to D-sub adapter (d-sub is the typical non-digital VGA connector, like on CRT monitors). You'll see no performance difference when using the DVI-to-D-sub adapter on your analog monitor. My monitor has two inputs--a DVI input and a D-sub input. Using either shows no difference in quality or performance. I only have a 19" monitor (flat-panel). Perhaps you only see a difference when using extremely large monitors? I haven't seen any difference when I used my card with an old CRT monitor, though I wasn't looking for issues specifically (though since I didn't notice any, I'd assume that they weren't present).

My friend with a Samsung 19" swears there is a difference between D-sub and DVI but I don't see it. Either way he admits its a very small difference.

I should note though that my X1950 Pro is being bottlenecked quite a bit by my CPU (same as yours).
I got my 6800 for $55...

Theres hundreds on eBay, and Newegg has some XT's for $70.

Wow! I had no idea they were going for that cheap now! That's an awesome deal--likely you wouldn't be able to find a comparably priced AGP card that offers as good of performance. Hope it all goes well!

thanks for the warning, i got it in time to stop before submitting my payment info.

i just checked my power supply, its an atx 12v, 115V/10A & 230V/5A, 420 watt max load.

what i was able to learn about the 1950 pro is that its stated requirement is 450watts but it sounds like some people have gotten it running on less even then i have.

anyone know more about this then i do? or have any experience running a 1950 card on less then ideal power supplies?

as to the other devices it has to run.. two cd/dvd drives and a floppy drive. no reason i couldn't disable the floppy and one cd drive though.
p4 3.0ghz cpu
36g hardrive... i want to say this is a maxtor 10k rpm drive. been awhile and i can't read the label in the box or find my spec sheet.
