Default Video Card RMA Database thread.

I would like to maintain a thread with a database of video cards that people get back from RMA's...

Kinda like a rough estimate on what card you "could" get back if you are planning on RMA'ing a dead card... Along with many other things.

We all know that different vendors do different things for an RMA procedure... My idea, might clear something up if someone with a dead card could look up a similar RMA on a list to have an idea what he/she is in for???

OK, here is the specifics I'm looking for to incorporate into a database. This is just a display of all the info that i will make available to the user to input. If you don't know, or don't care to, enter any part of this info don't. My (future) app will not force you to enter any info you don't want to. It will just leave that part empty.

The user will be asked to input there OCN user name. I think this part i will make required, so that the same user cannot enter their info more than once, by accident of course. I will make an option for the user to have their user name public info in the database, or private info so know one knows who you are. I just need some way of keeping track of a users info, and since your OCN user name is already once removed from you personally, i don't see why anyone would have an issue with this. And again, your OCN user name can be public, or private, your choice.

Here is the data structure i am starting with. If you think it needs to be changed up, please feel free to input some info about changes.

----------------------------------------

Video Card:
  • Brand Name
  • Card type with revision (8600GT OC, 7800GTX ACS...)
  • Card Model Number (0000000-000-00...)
  • Interface
Dates: (MM/DD/YYYY format)
  • Date Bought
  • Date Installed
  • Date Failed
  • Date RMA was processed
  • New card returned
Software:
  • Operating System (xp, vista, Linux...)
  • Drivers used (forceware 173.82...)
Overclock:
  • Hardware Overclock
    • Volt Modded GPU Core?
      • What vcore?
    • Volt Modded RAM?
      • What voltage?
    • Vmod done by Conductive pen?
    • Vmod done by Soldering?
    • Bios flash?
      • What app to flash bios?
  • Software Overclock
    • Program (within OS) to overclock?? (ati tool, riviara...)
Stock Clock Speeds:
  • Core clock
  • Ram Clock (full DDR speed, ie. 1800mhz, not 900mhz)
  • Shader clock (if any)
Overclocked Clock Speeds:
  • Core clock
  • Ram Clock (full DDR speed, ie. 1800mhz, not 900mhz)
  • Shader clock (if any)
Cooling:
  • Stock cooling?
  • Modified stock cooling?
    • Indulge...
  • Aftermarket air?
    • What cooler?
  • Modified Aftermarket air?
    • indulge...
  • Watercooling?
    • Waterblock make/model
    • Tube Inner Diameter size
    • Tube outer Diameter size
    • total length of tubing
    • Pump
    • Radiator
    • Coolant
    • coolant additives?
SLI: (Nvidia cards only)
  • Card ran in SLI?
  • Other Card Failed?
  • What Motherboard?
CrossFire: (ATI cards only)
  • Card ran in SLI?
  • Other Card Failed?
  • What Motherboard?
----------------------------------------

This above info is just off of the top of my head, so if there is something that doesn't look right, please let me know...

I am personally curious on the validity of video cards when overclocked. I have herd a lot about video cards when they are overclocked, it tends to drastically reduce the life span of the card.

Also, once enough info is presented, there may me some patterns on specific cards dieing prematurely. This may help people decide in the purchase of second hand cards.

Any suggestions?

Thanks! Let me know what you think about this idea.

2-23-08 EDIT:

I thought it might be appropriate to quote the specific RMA details per retailer. Kinda like a one stop location for the info from whatever company your trying to RMA though...

I'm starting with Nvidia retailers and will update this when new information is located.

Each RMA policy is cut and pasted in quotes below. I will also place a link that points directly to that retailers RMA web page so you can confirm the information. The info may change over time from what i have quoted and what is actually on each site. I will periodically check my info against the current info per retailer to make this thread that more valid and updated. And of course, if you notice an update that isn't quoted below, please feel free to PM me and I'll update it right away.

What do I get?

* Lifetime Warranties
* Transferable Protection
* Modder Friendly

Whats covered?
All 6, 7, and 8 series Graphics Cards are protected.

How do I get it?
All you have to do is purchase an XFX Graphics Card and register the product within 30 days of purchase to activate your Lifetime Protection.

Here’s the deal: We will repair and service your 6, 7, and 8 Series Graphics Card for as long
as you live. Even for those of you who know how to push our cards to the limits, if anything goes wrong, we’ll service it free of charge. All you have to do is register the card with us online. If you ever decide to sell or give the card away to someone, we’ll still honor the protection plan for the second owner as well. They just need to register the card with us. You get the protection AND the added value of being able to pass along a full warranty.

Warranty Details

XFX is excited to announce another industry first: The XFX Double Lifetime Protection! Now you—and your card’s next owner—are both covered by the XFX “shield” of protection. Should something go wrong with your 6 Series or greater Graphics Card, and you’ve registered the card with us online, we’ll cover the cost of repair and service—absolutely free! And, should you sell or transfer ownership of the card, the same service applies to the next owner, as long as they register the card with us online.

Now, it’s all fairly simple, but here are the Double Lifetime Protection specifics:

1. The XFX Double Lifetime Protection goes into effect once the initial Owner (Owner #1) registers the product with us on www.xfxforce.com. At that time, XFX promises that the graphics card purchased (Product) will remain free from any defects in material or workmanship for the lifetime of the Product.
2. A unique Registration ID will be issued for the Product upon confirmation of the registration.
3. Products received by XFX must be in original condition and must be complete with all original components to be covered by the protection.
4. To qualify, any 6 Series or greater Graphics Card purchased on or after April 17, 2007 must be registered within the first 30 days of purchase or the protection for the card will be limited to 1 year.
5. To transfer protection to a second owner, the second owner will have to register the card with the same Registration ID originally issued to the card. The existing term of the Protection will also transfer to the second owner.**

What the XFX Double Lifetime Protection covers:

1. The XFX Double Lifetime Protection covers only the repair of a 6 Series or greater Graphics Card. XFX will repair or replace the Product (no refunds). XFX makes no other warranty, express or implied. XFX is not responsible for loss, damage or shipping charges to our RMA Center.
2. Additionally, XFX reserves the right to inspect and verify the defects of the Product(s) that are returned.

XFX's liability under the Double Lifetime Protection is limited to the repair, or, at XFX's discretion, the replacement of the portion(s) of the Product that are found to be defective in material or workmanship. XFX reserves the right to claim shipping fees as well as a service charge* for any incomplete or modified Product that is returned and that requires repair or replacement, or when the Owner is not entitled to any coverage under the XFX Double Lifetime Protection.

To request a Double Lifetime Protection repair, simply go to our Help Desk and fill out a Support Ticket.

This exclusive program is valid only to purchases made in North America (USA or Canada).

* Service charge is variable based upon actual material costs to repair or replace missing or modified parts to return them to original factory condition.
** See additional details on the XFX Product Registration Page.

3-5-08 EDIT:

***No harm will come to your computer running this app***

but still i cant guarantee the above statement....

It's almost 5am and i have a very beta version of the database application running. v0.1. It is super retarded in the fact that there is no error prevention. That means you can type in something that crashes the app.

So, where ever you see a '(y/n)' at the end of a question. please type in only one character. Ether a 'y' or a 'n'.

Also, I'm using simple strings for now, so don't put in a space anywhere when you type in the info...

Like, When it asks "what OS did you use?" type in 'xpprosp2' NOT, 'xp pro sp2'.

I will be continually working on this based on the feed back from OCN. So if you like it, say so. If you don't like it and think its a dumb idea, feel free to PM about it, I'm fine with that. I like constructive criticism.

Again, SUPER beta!!!!!

app added to post...

EDIT: app is at a v0.3 release...

I RMA'd a HIS x1950Pro IceQ3 in February of this year, refund as I upgraded to x1950XT of the same model.

That one has just gone again so I bought the HIS 3870. I am RMAing the x1950XT in the hope that they don't made it anymore and then I could possibly get a 2nd 3870

Will take ~30 days however

Sweet! Give me the details for the x1950pro --> x1950XT and you'll be the first on the list!!

Details:

HIS x1950Pro IceQ3 PCIe - RMA'd due to faulty/grinding IceQ3 fan system - result: upgraded to HIS x1950XT IceQ3

HIS x1950XT IceQ3 PCIe - RMA in progress due to (surprisingly ) faulty/grinding IceQ3 fan system - result: pending (have purchased HIS3870 non-IceQ anyway)

edit - generally speaking the IceQ3 system is one of the best stock GPU cooling units I have used, also the best looking. Big problem however if the fan is faulty (which it is likely to be before the warranty is up) as you result in a lovely grinding which slows the fan down completely which means I don't leave my PC on when I'm not near it anymore - hassle.

Nice.

I'm not really sure on how to deal with a database situation with the info...

Hmm...
