I was originally going to get a 3870 when the cheapest 8800GT was $270+ but now its a tough decision.
If 3870 is for $214.99 and the 8800GT is for $237.99, I would go for 8800GT.

HD3870... With my current rig, my graphics card at 837/1251 and crossfire disabled(since you plan on getting one card) I get an average of 45 fps on Call of Duty 4 at "The Bog" mission. My settings are 1680x1050 @ 60Hz, All settings on Normal, Bodies on Insane, 4x AA, 16x AF, textures set to Extra...Basically, all settings cranked to the max. That is awesome for a card that i only spent 212 bucks on. The performance will steadily increase with each new driver release, that was shown in the case of the HD2900XT.

Why is everybody tripping over themselves to buy from NCIX as the alternative to Tiger Direct? Direct Canada has things usually $10-$20 cheaper than NCIX and with free shipping on orders over a certain amount and $9.99 at the most...Oh, AND they have the 3870 available.

Ever since DX10 came out, it seems ATI products are only good when AA is turned off. Now some games may not need AA but for me, AA hits is a dealbreaker.

That's true. It's a back and forth battle. ATI cards scale better in Crossfire than nVidia cards do in SLI. ATI cards can't handle AA as well as nVidia cards can.

Bah!

They should merge and we'll have a super mega video card producer...nVidiATI. Kinda sounds like the mafia.

That would be AWESOME. The problem is lack of competition = outrageous prices. Think flagship cards 800$+ And there won't be any alternatives....ouch...

Exactly. That's the point I keep trying to make when a few tech-tards here at work go on and on about how the two should merge.

They also say the same about Intel and AMD.

I feel the urge to smack them.
