Default 3870 vs 8800gt

I'm leaning towards the 3870, because the only res i'll be gaming on is 1024 and i heard the 3870 overclocks pretty well.

The 8800GT is a better card when you compare them at stock speeds as well as when both are overclocked. The only thing that differs is that the 3870 may have a better cooling solution since it's a dual slot design.

Since you don't game at a high resolution however the 3870 will perform well for what you want to do.

If you can find the 3870 cheaper than the 8800 GT, then go for the 3870.

For playing at that resolution you're better getting the new 8800GT 256MB!

No no no.... the 3870 and 8800 are VERY close in FPS when running a lower resolution. Th 8800 GT does start to put a sizeable lead on the 3870 when running a 24" plus monitor, but on those resolution he'll be much better off with a 3870. Also the 3870 is quite a bit cheaper than the 8800GT, and 3870's in X-Fire are pretty much dead even with 8800GT's in SLI (and cost significantly less) becuase X-Fire scales better (at this time) than SLI does.

So in conclusion, bang for buck is deffinetly the 3870 for you Carl.

Your best bet is the 3870. An added plus is the better scalability of crossfire compared to SLI. 8800GT is a good card but the best buy now (until Feb. 2008) is the 3870.

I disagree, at 1024 with no aa/af they are similar, throw in aa/af even at 1024 there is a hefty difference. Let alone if you up the resolution to even 1280
Source

Basically yes the 3870 would be decent, but if you have the money the 8800gt is considerably better and would probably keep you happier longer (games after crysis)
