Alright, it looks like the 9600GT is the best choice in this situation, then. Thank you all very much for your suggestions.

Sounds good, think of it this way, the upgrade to the 1950xtx would have been great, but the 9600gt will be much better!

Try running any dx10 game on SLi 8500s. Oh wait YOU CAN'T! (not at any where NEAR decent frame rates that is)

the 9600GT will be a solid choice, and you can SLI it later for some real power. Alternatively, you could take the 8800GT for some SLI love
please don't ever mention SLIing 8500GTs...

The x1950xt won against the 7 series. So I have no idea what that guy is talking about. Unless you count the GX2? But there was a x1950 pro x2. Not to mention the 7 series can barely keep up with the games now, while the x1950xt is still hauling ***.

__________________it's for the 3850. decent performer. better then the x1950xtx and same price more or less. if you can afford another 50 bucks I say either the 9600gt or 3870. not quite a champ anymore. going from my x1950xt overclocked and tweaked to my 2900 pro at sub stock settings the 2900 won hands down. it was even worse when going into overclocked settings.

I didn't mean as a champ as in a high runner competing with today's card, I just meant that it can play newer games with most to all high settings. The 2900 is an upgrade, no matter which way you look at it, but the 1950XTX is more than enough to play games.
