Exclamation TIM and when to replace It?

I was cleaning my old pc 2day and I took off the fan to my BFG NVIDIA GeForce 5500 OC 256MB PCI and I noticed the TIM was almost fully dryed out so my ? Is shoul I replace the TIM. And can I use just any TIM?

Yes, you should replace it if it is dried up. If you didnt already remove the heatsink, be careful not to damage the chip. You can use any tim, AS5 would probably be a good choice. That is what I use.

Yeah replace it that stock crap sucks


and thermal paste will work, But If your looking for Great temps only the Best thermal paste like AS5, OCZ freeze, And a few others will do.

The problem nobody has perceived to let you in on is that your TIM may in fact not be dried out at all. From the numerous sinks that I have removed most of them have ceramic TIM and would in appearance look like dried out paste. You can replace ceramic TIM with better paste type (AS5) any time you choose. Make sure to scrape all of the ceramic off really good and clean with alcohol and a q-tip before applying the new stuff. You can use an old credit card to get the majority of the ceramic off and then get little specs with your fingernail.

Also keep in mind that your heatsink may have thermal pads that make contact with the memory and allow heat to transfer from them to the heatsink. It's recommended -not- to reuse them and -not- to remove them and try to get away with TIM. They're on there for a reason.
