Arrow 8800GTX > 9800GTX, what?

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...review-16.html

So a friend offered his 9800GTX for $120. So I started looking up benchmarks against my 8800GTX and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the 8800GTX beating the 9800GTX!

Am I missing something guys? Doesn't the 9800GTX have the G92 & PCI-E 2.0?

The 8800gtx is a tad more powerful than the 9800gtx...

The only advantage the 8800 has over the 9800 is the higher memory bandwidth. this helps at super high resolutions

but as you can see, the 9800GTX beats the 8800GTX in most of the other benchmarks such as crysis.

So, would I benefit from this if I have game at 1680x1050? Also, is there anyway to test the card out to make sure it functions properly? (aside from the obvious plugging it in)

They cut down the design for the 65nm shrink because memory interfaces don't scale as well as logic and cache. It has less bandwidth and less ROPs than the 8800GTX, the only advantage it has is more gadgets (higher version PureVideo, CUDA) and higher clocks.

The gains you'll see, if any, will be minimal and you'd be better off overclocking your 8800GTX, IMO.

The 9800GTX consumes less power I believe as well. I would attempt to trade cards + a lil bit of cash. Overclock that thing.

The 8800GTX get's pwned by a 4850 1280x1024 with AAx0 since the 4850 get twice as much FPS, but if you add AAx8+ and crank it up to 1920x1200(8800GTX territory^^) you'll cry with your 3FPS of 4850 power...
even at 1280x1024 the 4850 gets 4FPS and the 8800GTX still works as if you didn't add the extra AA, maybe a 4FPS drop.

I've tested both cards
My friend have a E8400 3.0 and 4850+ 4GB ram at same speed as mine
and I got Q6600 2.4 and that's the FPS we got...
If you want games at low rez and no AAxXX get a 9800GTX cuz they are better at that rez. the 9800GTX is pretty much like the 4850...

If you have an 8800GTX, don't bother upgrading unless you get a 4870 or 280GTX.

The 8800GTX has been known to outperform the 9800GTX in high resolutions/detail (AA/AF) in some games. This is in large part, I believe, to the superior memory bandwidth and capacity (384-bit/768MB, opposed to 256-bit/512MB of the 9800GTX).

The 9800GTX has a better, revised core (G92) that is faster than the 8800GTX's (G80). This allows the 9800GTX to perform better in lower resolutions, where the memory bandwidth and capacity are not quite as important.

On average, they both perform around the same.

All that matters to me is 1680x1050... That's like mid-high resolution (if not high).

I was thinking about buying it, then either selling my 8800GTX or the 9800GTX
