Default cooling an 8800gt.....

I was just wondering what safe temps are for an 8800gt. I have an XFX alpha dog edition and its currently not overclocked at all. Completely idle my temps are at 58c 50c and 46c according to GPU-Z, and thats with the fan at 75%. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems 58c totally idle with no OC and a 75% fan is a bit high. I overclocked the hell outta the card to run some benchies but I didn't wanna keep the OC on cause temps were getting HOT! It has stock cooling mainly because I'm afraid to screw something up messing with taking the PCB off. I've read that even applying some AS5 can help temps quite a bit and I have some AS5 left over from my CPU but I'm just a lil scared of messing with it. How easy is it to take off the PCB and aply AS5 or even change the cooler and what risks do I run damaging the card?

That's not bad, especially on stock air cooling. My 8800GT runs ~60c idle and ~70c load with an OC. The GPU's core can handle up to ~100*c without problems...obviously that is way higher than my preference so as long as it doesn't jump over 75c I wouldn't worry.

I think you should use a non-electrically-conductive thermal paste like MX-2 for your 8800GT

If you can't do that, be extremely careful with your AS5

Dont get too worked up about gpu temps. People like to keep them under 70 C because it doesnt feel right when its over, but they have been known to be safe up to 100 C. You still have a lot of headroom left so just go for it
