Let me see if i understand this, you were using a Compaq Computer and you had this computer for 7 years and just recently or whatever it died out?

Well i had this Gateway Computer since 2000, and i take apart and clean out my Computer and the PSU every year, and its still working fine. I have use Many PCI cards in this computer, plus i have a USB hub hook up, along with an extra PCI 2.0 card and a external 500GB My Book Edition HD. Working fine and its been 8 years. I would rather keep it in, until it dies out, then buy a new one. Also, my PSU/tower is small, so i have to find a PSU in my size with higher watts, i don't believe none exist.

But i highly doubt the PSU will die out anytime soon. Gateway makes product products. Their stuff is long lasting.

May i ask you what you had in your Compaq computer?
What was the specs on it too and the PSU?

Is there way that i can tell which one may fit. They might be small, but the way my tower is built, on the back, the fan is fit in into a certain spot. I can't explain it, but you have to put in the PSU in a certain way. How would i know one of them at newegg is the correct one?

Well mine was a 250W PSU in a Compaq Presario 4400US. System specs where as follows:

OS: XP Home
CPU: Celeron 1.3 GHz
Memory: 384MB @ 133 MHz
Video: Gforce MX 4000- 128MB AGP 8X (only had a 2x slot )
HD: 40GB 7200RPM

Yeah it was old; I was very close to maxing out what it could do. All I could real do was add a 256MB Ram Card, pulling out the 128. And yes I kept great care of the inside (cleaned it out every 6 months) did not want to go near the PSU though.

It may surprise you to know it ran Far Cry on minimal settings all right... except for the movies where the sound got muted every second or so.

I think this dell has a 250W PSU as well. It may be a 300, or a 200 though. Just know I looked at it and it was one of those 3. At any rate I doubt very much it could handle the GS 8400 due to this.

my compaq that i got in 2000 still runs and it was a beast when i got it and have only added 1 stick of ram. the power supply fan went out about a year ago so i just hooked up a case fan that runs at 100% to the back of it and she still chugs along. my brother currently uses it for aim and stuff. it doesnt work too well with aim 6 but it can run aim 5.9 and play flash games like a beast!

Well I have looked and looked and looked at Tiger Direct and New Egg for Video Cards. I thought about getting this HIS Radeon 9250 here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=ITD&body=MAIN for $55, but I am unsure whether I should buy this computer in the first place. My uncle wants $200 for this thing which the reviews back when it came out called "the newest old computer on the market" because dell used allot of their 3rd generation components on it. On the plus side I get a 15'' Dell LCD Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, and speakers thrown in with this. Still upgrading the ram to 2GB would set me back a large sum as it's DDR (yes the old stuff that actually costs more than the new ), and the PSU does not give me confidence in it's ability to handle a new video card like the 8400GS.

Legendary if you’re reading this would you mind sharing with us how you got an 8400GS which asks for a 450W or better PSU to run on a 90W system?

Better card for cheaper

I really suggest you save up for a new system though, band-aid fixes aren't good value for your money

Well $till Legendary said the FX 5200's are not very good for some reason. I know it would be better to build my own or even buy one pre-built. But I had such terrible luck with new egg's UPS shipping, and they withheld over $200 from the refund until I discovered their error and made them correct it. I know every one say's how great new egg is, I guess I am one of the unlucky few who can't say the same.

I plan to go into town tomorrow to see what parts are available for this old thing. Does any one know of any reputable venders other than New Egg and Tiger Direct? They are the only one’s I know of.

Well it's a toss up between a HIS Radeon 9250 for $55 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...=ITD&body=MAIN , or a Powercolor Radeon HD 2400 Pro for $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131082

Which one should I get if I decide to buy this old computor?
