I'd go with the 4870X2 myself, which would be my first ever ATI card if I did get one. The 280GTX in SLI is beastly, but the 4870X2 is about the same and:

1. Cheaper.
2. A single card solution.
3. Better suited to better mobos (sorry nforce guys).
4. Can be paired up with another later.

Yeah but considering you don't have a Crossfire board and doesn't want to upgrade to one(not at least the next suitable upgrades shows up on mobos and cheaper DDR3), would you get a GTX280+ and eventually grab another, or would you get one 4870x2 and.. well. Have to change after?

The only thing that makes me want to get a GTX280+ right now is expandability on my current board, otherwise I would try my first ATI in nearly half a decade. :<

even at 1080p the 4870x2 will be the better option for gaming. Have you thought about the GTX260 sli? thats a more fair priced and performance comparision. The 4870x2 still whoops its butt though. Will you be folding? if so then go nvidia. If not the go ATI.

Well I have to admit I was folding, but it all depends. I don't think the GTX280+ serie is going to be that much greater, probably slightly because it'll be cooler allowing more headroom for overclocking, but... Meh.

I wouldn't get 260's because I would rather be able to expand to 2 x 280's in the future. Would probably go for EVGA for the step-up and hope a better one comes in in the next 90 days, but incase I don't opt for NVIDIA, and be tempted by the red tide, what brand offers good warranties?

Honestly, I am going to get flamed here but I think with your current motherboard you should get the GTX280+ when it comes out. I guess if you dont fold that much then your options are still pretty open but then you would have to spend money on a motherboard if you plan on crossfire. Ya know, i really wish nvidia would not be so stupid with requiring their chipsets to run SLI.

I think im going with the 4870x2 over the gtx 280 sli. Not only do you have to pay $400 for the first, but another $400 for the second and then another $200 for the PSU. Thats $1000 when the 4870x2 can be had for $550. I even heard that there is a guy that cracked the codes to enable physx on the ATI cards, so it looks like your going to be ahead with the 4870x2 being it that its dx10.1 and has the ability to run phys x if its ever needed.

4870 X2 is the best video card released to date. It is well worth the money that was spent on these video cards. Also I would not consider nForce chipsets (unrealiable POS).
