Default GTX280 SLI vs 4870X2

Factoring out price, which is the better between these two: GTX280 in SLI or 4870X2?

The few reviews where both setups are present give mixed results. Some have the 4870X2 outperforming the GTX280SLI and vice versa or on par with each other with a gap of less than 10FPS; others have benchmarks where AA and AF aren't even on which makes the benchmark rather pointless for me.

These are the reviews I've looked at where both the 4870X2 and GTX280 SLI are present in each test.

Well I must say.. My GPU is doing me greatly. However, it is a bit of a heat distributor. But my room is always cold, so yeah. Two of these, lol. I don't know how hot the 4870X2 gets. But I am much impressed by it. I don't know which is better, but 4870X2 would be more worth the price than SLI 280s.

They're more or less on par with each other

The 4870X2 has the advantage of a better price and no need for a crossfire/SLI board (I also think it uses less power than GTX280 SLI)

4870x2 broham.... the reviews are a tad bit mixed but from I've seen, they're pretty much on par.... you have to factor in that the 4870x2, although a dual GPU card, is still a single card! That leaves you with room to CF in the future, unlike having SLIed GTX280s now

As a general rule, I really wouldn't even consider the Anandtech review, they've been becoming more questionable lately, especially when dealing with AMD.

It looks like if you're dealing with a 2560x resolution, then SLI may be the better performer. However, if it's less than that I think the 4870X2 seems to be the better choice.

Also, I would bet that for tests done with 8xAA instead of 4xAA, the 4870X2 would not only remain playable most of the time, but that it would beat the SLI setup hands down. I haven't seen any review that tests this, though.

4870x2, price, performance and picture quality, which was always better than Nvidia.

The 4870 X2 is better for the price and performance. Look at the reviews:

Get two 4870X2's if you can afford 2 280's.
