what drivers are you using for the GTX 280? Can you post a comparison between the current 177.41 and the 177.92 beta?
great thread btw

I'm using 177.83, they've the best performance on the gtx280 thus far. Also my clocks are set to 735 and shader to 1470 (on stock fan @ 100%). After I get a waterblock for the gtx I expect 750 core and 1500 shader. My idea with this test was to show that the difference between these cards AREN'T as big as everyone expected. (Although the 4870x2 handles bigger res's and AA better, ATI has always been the leader when it came to AA/AF) it's still a fairly close call, especially with the OC'ing abilities of the gtx compared to the 4870x2.
End of the day: Anything under 1920x1200 the gtx280 is definitely the card for you. 24" and up, (unless you go SLI) the 4870x2 is the clear winner, improving the margin by size.) |

correct me if im wrong, is it a single 280gtx vs 4870xfire (aka 4870x2)
__________________wouldent it be natural to test it as 2*280gtx (sli) vs 4870x2. which one would win then?

Well, I need to ask, did you both grab a blank drive and do a clean install? Because if not that has the potential to really screw with your results. Also, did you use the cards in the exact same system? It looks like no, that while you had very similar rigs they were using different hardware. Not good.
I'd like to see this re-done, I know you probably don't want to but if you could it would be really cool to see how big a difference be very controlled makes to the benchmarks. So, grab a blank drive, or back up your data then wipe your hard drive, install the first video card, and install windows, drivers, and benchmark programs. Run all your benchmarks. Then wipe that drive, install the second video card in the SAME system and install windows again, drivers and benchmark programs. Run all benchmarks. Then go through and compare results. I think if you did that you'd be shocked at how different your results are from your first go around. I really would like to see that.

Why was a Nvidia 780i board used to test the 4870x2????
The intel board a so much better EVEN with nvidia cards... Im getting 4000marks more in 3dmark06 using same hardware except fo the board running a gtx280... Use a Intel board with the 4870x2 and watch it wipe the floor with the 280gtx.. Im buying a 4870x2 tomorow, doing a straight swap with drivers and rebenching my system to see the real difference between the cards for my self!! the looser gets sold.... |
