Default 4870X2 vs GTX280 Final Showdown!

Update on its way with 8.12 Drivers (15/12/08)

Hey guys , me and a friend have decided to test how much better or worse a 4870X2 is against a GTX 280

Here we're going to do a series of benches to dermine how close these cards are in comparison.

Two rules apply:

1)Overclocking on gfx allowed
2)Screenshots must be posted

System specs:

G4: Qx9650 @ 4Ghz
Asus Maximus
4 Gb ddr2 @ 800 (4x1GB)
Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit
XFX Gtx280

Porky: Qx9650 @ 4Ghz
XFX 780i
OCZ DDR800 ram (2x2GB sticks)
Sapphire 4870x2
8.8 Drivers

Other specs are n/a. . .

Games that will be tested:

1)Crysis dx 9 all high no:aa/af and 16qx 1280x 1024 and 1920x1200

2)A's Creed, latest patch (whichever it is, dx10.1 is a feature of ati so use it) same res as mensioned above, no aa and full aa

3)Mass effect: same res as above, no aa and full aa

4)F:Fow (Make sure you have v-sync switched off ingame and catalyst set to -> use app setting

5)Company of Heroes: Same res, no aa and full

6)Cod 4: same res as above, no aa and full.

This post will be edited as we get the benches done. . .

ill keep this updated , doing this on anather forum! wish me luck!

****Reserved****

This is where all results will be posted

As promised , warhead! , this is the first mission, about 10 minutes of gameplay!....

*********************Comparative Graphs************************

***********Final Graphs**********

1920*1200 resolution

Conclusion :

As you can see , both cards are more than capable of maxing these games out.............I think that we are both either cpu limited , as the results are extremily similar , or a game needs to come out that stresses the gpu's more .

World In conflict :

44 against 46.............virtually the same score..............soo either card is perfect if you want to see this game maxed out , however the GTX280 had a minimum fps of 24 , wile the 4870x2 had a minimum of 29....but eitherway , each card is fine.

Call of duty 4

Again , this game looks beautifull , and on either card , it runs great , 106 (ati) against 102 (nvidia) , soo again , no real difference here

Assasins Creed

Some interesting results here , the first mission goes to ATI (indoor mission) , wile the second outdoor mission goes to Nvidia , but whatever way you look at it , both cards max this game out , soo either is fine

Company of heroes Opposing fronts

Heres one game , where ATI really smashes Nvidia , 55 against 35 , more than a 50% lead here , however , the GTX280 still maxes this game out @ 35fps , soo it will still be very playable.

Crysis!

oohh , the big boy! , I have not tested crysis with the new drivers , but it seems they have improved everything accross the bourd , ill add in a warhead graph when i pick it up today................

In the tests that we ran , the GTX280 dominated the 4870X2 in lower resolutions , 1680*1080 and below all went to the GTX 280 , leading the 4870X2 by upto 25%!...........upon higher resolutions and AA , ATI comes back and wins this particular battle , 34FPS avg , not too bad , but i was expecting higher

3D Mark Vantage

14628 (ATI) vs 14391 (Nvidia) in performance mode , Nvidia were using the PhysX drivers ,
7100(ATI) against 5100 (nvidia) in xtreme preset (my friend never gave me a score for this one , i have added it in from a few websites that an nvidia card gets with those specs , hope thats ok)

Closing thoughts

Well , not soo much of a "smashing" from the 4870x2 that I was expecting , and I dont know what the review sites use to bench , but I at some games , have gotten completely different results , on some websites , I was supposed to get AVG in COD4 205FPS maxed out on my res??................im getting half that , however , World In conflict i should be getting 40fps , im getting 46.............

a few notes though , all the benchmarks were done with atleast 50 processes running in the background on my pc atleast , soo this is as close to real world performance you can expect ,

In terms of who is the winner , the 4870X2 or the GTX280 , well , without a doubt the 4870X2 does beat the GTX280 , but it is not neccesary to get a 4870X2 over a GTX280 at the moment , as both cards max out all games , however at higher resolutions and AA , that is when the extra power of the 4870x2 comes in and starts beating nvidia's card , the GTX280 starts struggling with full AA on , ati doesent seem to be affected as much!

peace guys , hope you enjoyed my review! , ill add in more from time to time , but untill then , happy gaming!

Note : FPS was capped at 60 , how do i disable the cap? vsync is diabled in CCP , but it still capped it at 60fps

minimum fps never went below 55 , even though it does say 27 , that was more of a split second jerk.....more on their way!

Default i vote the 4870x2 is the winner

yeah the 4870x2 is going to stomp the GTX280 at higher res... but not testing with max aa/af is putting GTX at avantage i think you should test it both ways because i know for a fact that ATI cards do much better with aa/af on.

I'll definitely be watching this thread with much interest. I'm currently thinking about a mid-term upgrade involving moving to 1920x1200, new gfx & new PSU. As such, the whole 280(SLI or otherwise) vs. 4870x2 is of major importance to me

Bigger. Faster. More expensive. I love the ethos
