there's no reason for it not to work,

you could get either a 4870, or 4870x2 and crossfire it with your current 4870

i would recommend adding a single card though, and i think having 512mb of video memory on the single card (your current 4870) will force the X2 to only use 1gb of its 2gb of memory when in cf-X

not entirely sure about the last part though....and video memory is not your concern at anything below 2680x1600

EDIT: nothing will use tri-fire 4870's to it's full potential for a long time, and if your PROC is running under 3.0ghz, it would probably bottleneck tri-fire slightly

Two 4870 512mb on Crossfire > One 4870 X2 2gb

However, remember that the 4870 X2 is a single card which can be put on Crossfire as well.

There are some reviews and benchmarks here on OCN. I'm looking for them now. But my understanding is the 4870x2 is better yhen the 4870 CF at higher resolutuions. Other then that, they are about the same.

edit: Update

4870x2 or 2 x 4870?

Here's some reviews for you
(Keep in mind, they are a bit dated, so driver performance should be better by now)

Wrong. All multi-gpu configurations have microstutter
Not just dual gpu cards

They score exactly the same in benches.

At higher res (1920x1200 and above) there is a slight advantage to the X2 due to ram.

also its cheaper

you can add a second one.

you only need two pci-e power connectors instead of 4

the fan actually works properly....

On that, I would save some $$ and just get the 4870X2.

more ram, less microstuttering because they don't have to copy the information to two sets of ram... just get the 4870x2.

also beware of compatibility issues with the pci-express x16 1.0 slots. 2.0 has a much higher chance of working properly with it. some people have had issues with their 4870x2's where only one GPU does any work and the other one just sits there producing heat, and using watts.

The drivers for CrossFireX are pretty crap at the moment to be honest. A lot of people have seen a decrease in performance when using two 4870 X2s over one. That will surely change when better drivers are released.

4870X2 is better but you have to wait for better drivers.
