There are some reviews and benchmarks here on OCN. But my understanding is the 4870x2 is better then the 4870 CF at higher resolutuions. Other then that, they are about the same.

4870x2 or 2 x 4870?

Here's some reviews for you
(Keep in mind, they are a bit dated, so driver performance should be better by now)

Wrong. All multi-gpu configurations have microstutter
Not just dual gpu cards

They score exactly the same in benches.

At higher res (1920x1200 and above) there is a slight advantage to the X2 due to ram.

also its cheaper

you can add a second one.

you only need two pci-e power connectors instead of 4

the fan actually works properly....
I'm sure a pair of 4870 1Gb cards might show more performance, But I havent sen any numbers myself yet...

For now just a standard 1280x1024, later I will upgrade to a wider monitor. Also I'm considering to put watercooling on the 4870, since I already have a loop going for my processor, and I understand that a 4870x2 waterblock is much more expensive than a block for the 4870. So, for now, I'm leaning towards getting 2 4870 in crossfire.

I also heard that it is easier to overclock the 4870 than the x2, my friend has a single 4870 clocked at 860/4000, and his getting around 18k in 3dmark06 which is really good.

Woah, running 2x 4870 on a macro ATX, that's awesome.

Micro ATX boards only have two ram slots. the cards and CPU HS just make it look smaller...

Thats a DFI X48 ATX board.

look at my P5E in attached pic for example
