I'm helping a friend of mine build a new PC for gaming on a 19" monitor. Which of these cards would be a better choice?

you can't go wrong either way. Very similar cards.
EDIT - according to benchmarks 4830 has a slight lead, but had the lead in every game tested. It the prices are similar, go ATI.

From what I've seen, the AA and AF seems to be where the 4830 starts getting weak. Either way, you can't go wrong. I had the same decision and went nvidia over ati because of the lifetime warranty.

I would say the 4830. They are both roughly $130 and the 4830 out performs. If you can stretch about $40 more dollars you could get the 4850. But like the previous poster said, if you plan on SLIing then get the 9800GT, if you plan on Crossfireing get the 4830 or possibly the 4850.

On newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131129 The 4830 is 110 after rebate but have to pay shipping (8.25).
The 9800GT isn't much slower and is 100 after rebate but comes with free shipping That's a 20 dollar difference. I think the 9800GT is about equal trade with 4830 for the money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130380 Plus with 9800GT if you ever have a problem, the most of the support is significantly better than the current choices that are selling the 4830s. Visiontek becoming the only one that comes to mind that isn't terrible with ATI, and I haven't seen their 4830 yet if it comes out at the same price point as the current 4830, get it!
