1.) the 2gb of RAM (too much or actually needed?)
2.) 2 x 800 stream processors (compared to 216 in the gtx 260, huge difference in numbers!)
3.) dx10.1 (more "futureproof"?)

tell me what you think. are these trivial factors to be taken into consideration when deciding between the 2? or what?
At 1280x1024 either of these two would be a waste of money. Best bang for buck for you would be a 9800GT or 9600GT.

I use the same res as you, and I have a gtx 260 core 216.

At that res 4850x2 won't be much of a help so I think you shouldn't look into that. Plus one GPU is easier to handle than two.

neither, in a few days the GTX285 will be out and should cost about that, newegg has a BGF GTX280 for $315-$30mir=$285 with free shipping, so u could jump on that but the 285s should cost about the same
the more SPs ati has mean nothing, each processor is much less efficient (kinda like athalon 64 vs pentium 4, p4 had more ghz, but was still slower)
2gb of vram is not needed until at very least 1920x1200
and dx10.1 is pretty much useless, almost no difference over dx10 and not much uses it
and nvidia has physX which ati doesnt have

I would look into a 4830. They are great budget cards and right now are only $99:

Dude get the 4850x2! It will pump the GTX 260 at any resolution and leaves room for a future upgrade in monitor. Get the 1GB one to keep costs down if you do.

Get the 4850x2. Theres no contest. Even at your res....newer games will be more demanding, what happens when the GTX 260 can't keep up with max IQ settings?

ps. I'm not dogging the GTX 260 at all, just saying. 4850x2 is more powerful.

With your res, either would be a good choice. If you are willing to wait a bit, read up some reviews on the GTX 285, and if it looks good go for it. Otherwise, or if you want to act now, go for the 4850x2, it's more powerful and will allow you to go quad crossfire in the future.

Question:
So for my 24" Benq the best bet for me would be 4850x2? I am, as the OP, biased about the two choices but I have a 24" and my trigger finger is itching right now.

Why not, the price is right man. Just make sure you can handle the noise these cards make.....people say it can get loud.

strangely, ive found bfg's OC2 gtx280 (overclocked version) to be much cheaper on my main computer parts site! gtx 280: 190EU, hd4850x2: 270EU !! this is quite a price difference! what should i opt for, now that the prices differ to a point of reconsideration?

have in mind that i could SLI/CF in the future which brings me to a second question of gtx280 sli vs hd4850x2 CF ?
