they perform almost equally. one will perform better in one game, and the other in a different game. so what games do you play?

Oh, also is this a step up from the 3870x2?

I moved from a 3870x2 to a 4870 512MB. The 4-series was a little better but all-in-all they were very close. In some games the extra memory of the 1GB version really shines so I would say it would be a noticeable upgrade.

Both are excellent picks and perform literally within 2-3 fps of each other in most games.

In some games the Radeon wins, in others the GTX260 wins.

My suggestion is to buy whichever card you can find cheaper. Just make sure to go with either the Radeon HD 4870 1GB, or the GTX260 Core 216.

The gtx260 has a better cooler, because it dumps the hot air outsize the case.

Other than that, they're really about identical in performance.

I would get the 4870 personally. If you want a GTX 260 then get EVGA or XFX or somebody. MSI is pretty bad IMO.

They has similar performance so get the cheaper price one. 4870 is 150w uses less power than the 182w GXT260.

Because GTX260 is MSI i would go with 4870 1GB. Mine is going good so far. 815/1025Mhz. Loads about 65C with stock cooler.
