The 3870x2's are beasts in 3dmark06, they are almost as good as 4870x2 there!

Ey nice work (+1 rep) a lot of people would find this helpful.

BTW, since you already own 4850,4870, if you have time, maybe you can do a clock-for-clock comparison of the two? And also show us how much the 4850 has to be overclocked just to match/come close to 4870's performance? Even better if you can get a 4830 and do 4870/4850/4830 clock-for-clock comparison (since they all share basically the same core), to show us how much the DDR5 and shader units affect real game performance? This would help us in deciding buying new cards in the future... Sounds like I'm asking for much, but only if you have time. Thanks

Well I sort of already did. If you look at the graphs, the HD4850 @ 775/1175 comes quite close to the stock clocked HD4870, which is quite remarkable. It is about 5% slower in synthetic benchmarks.

Now it seems that the GDDR5 really allows the HD4870 to take off in games, as it was up to 20% faster than the overclocked HD4850. I would estimate that @ 825+ Core clock an HD4850 would stay neck and neck with an HD4870 and perhaps even beat it in some synthetic benches.

I did not have the opportunity to test an HD4830, but I will definitely add it if I get one before this rig goes down

Haha yes it was very much the clear winner but its price v performance is a bit lower. The ATI cards were a hassle.

Looks like I might be picking up XFX GTX285 since it' beats all these cards. LoL, I'm hoping that I'll be one of five people that will win a XFX GTX285 on newegg.com. Here's to hoping and great job on the comparisons.
