Default how much would it cost to make a computer more powerfull than a next gen console?

im just curious to see if anybody knows what graphics card (and cpu's) are equivalent to the chips in the ps3 and xbox 360. i cannot find any benchmarking software that has been adapted for the consoles and the diffences would make them irrelevent but in terms of gameplay, fps lighting AA etc what would be needed to beat a console?

please dont turn this thread into a console bashing thread i feel we need to know how much it would cost to turn a family pc into an up to date complete family entertainment system.

Your hardware is already better than a console. The difference is that your computer runs an OS made for lots of things whereas a console's sole purpose is games. The games are also coded differently which makes them look optimized for the console, but the same graphics on a PC would be unsatisfactory.

another thing that is overlooked is the console can be pluged into massive screen and not flinch, whereas a computer can stugle at higher resolutions. (excuse my terrible graphics card btw, new one on monday) what would it take for a pc to perform aswell as a console in gaming?

For your computer, and for higher resolutions, you may want to look at getting a GTX260 216 or 4870 1gb and another 2gb of RAM.

A feature that you don't notice on consoles is that they blur the backgrounds since they can't display that much quality at once. That feature on a PC makes the image look like poo.

Once again, you can't really compare the two. A big screen TV is big size wise, but the resolution is at most probably 1920xwhatever. I run games on my 40" 1080p TV on all full settings without any problems. And they look 10x better than their console counterparts.

Plugging a console into a larger screen does not necessarily mean you are increasing it's resolution, often just the size of the screen. You can do the same with a computer.

You can't exactly compare the two, as they don't play the same things. Like the previous poster said, optimizations favor the console. But as far as hardware goes, it would take (off the top of my head) about $500 for a respectable, full computer and accessories to match/beat a console.

Even though consoles say they display games at 1080p, for the most part that's not true. Some games aren't even 720p because the consoles can't run them smoothly. COD comes to mind...it's something like 576p that's upscaled to 720p.

I'd love to run 3D mark 06 on a PS3 and XBOX 360 just to see what the scores would be.

Consoles are holding the whole games industry graphically back
