This thread dies now.

You will like either card. Your decision to order the HD4890 was wise, as it's a lot better price/performance. Get your card and enjoy it. Don't worry about whether some other card is getting .2FPS more in Game X according to random site B.

Well, I like my new 4890 (Toxic) but the ATI control panel is just horrible. It doesn't allow you to change anything except the absolute bare minimum (AA and AF) and it doesn't support per-game configuration.

I'm actually thinking about spending the extra $60 and buying an EVGA GTX 285, even though I know it will be a little slower.

Here's some examples of what I've tried doing in the last day:

1) Installed Vampire The Masquerade and tried to force 8x AA. Couldn't do it without globally changing the settings.
2) Installed Mass Effect. Had to force AA through drivers (again).
3) Installed Overlord 2. Same as above, but this required me to install PhysX drivers as well. (another reason to stick with nVidia)
4) Installed The Witcher. The game felt laggy so I tried to lower the prerender/render-ahead frames (like nVidia's control panel allows). The option doesn't exist in ATI's control panel.
5) Tried installing ATI Tray Tools. Due to Vista x64's driver signing, I couldn't install it.
6) My desktop doesn't seem to have v-sync enabled or something. For example, when I move a window around the desktop very quickly it looks horrible. I don't remember this happening at all with my 8800 GTX.

So far I'm just not thrilled with ATI's software.

However, the hardware seems nice and fast in the reviews though.

*sigh*

The GTX 285 will perform better, it's just the matter of how much more expensive it is compared to an HD 4890.

Really though? Most benchmarks that compare the 4890 @ 1 GHz show it beats the GTX 285 in almost everything.

I really want to get the GTX 285 and I don't care less about it being more expensive, but I do want to the fastest available. (between these two cards)

Yeah but most benchmarks overclock the hell out of the 4890, but don't overclock the 285 nearly as much as it could probably go. A core overclock goes a lot farther on an Nvidia card than on an ATI, so if you happen upon a good overclocking GTX285 you will blow any 4890 out of the water.

To make things even more complicated, check out this deal: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...dlist=celebros

HIS 4890 for $160 after rebate minus $30 if you use eBillMe.

Total for two HIS 4890 = $310 shipped.

However, my P5B Deluxe only supports one 16x and one 4x card. Doh!!

Still certain games may utilize the 512bit memory interface verse the 256 bit.

MMO's I bet will run better on the GTX 285 vs the ATI.

I had the same issue with tearing when dragging windows and for some reason Windows would also slow greatly when trying to expand/collapse them. Was why I sent mine back, but I might get a 4890 because of the price/performance and hope the problems are fixed.

Reformat and do a clean reinstall of your OS. Sometimes it just takes that to get ATI cards to fully work in your system.

That's a bit of a drastic measure just to get a card working.
