I've purchased an EVGA GTX 285 FTW Edition for $379.99 (minus $20 rebate) from NewEgg but it was defective so I ordered a Sapphire 4890 Toxic Edition for $249.99.
__________________The card seems really nice but I'm thinking that I just prefer nVidia for some reason (CUDA, better game profile support in the drivers, etc). However, it seems like every review I can find shows that the 4890 Toxic beats the GTX 285 in every test. Firing Squad: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...d_4890_review/ Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3555&p=20 I'm actually trying to find a review of an overclocked GTX 285 and an overclocked 4890 so that I can make my comparisons. I'm finding a few things about my ATI 4890 that I don't like, but I'm only going to switch back to the GTX 285 if it's indeed faster but according to the reviews above, it's not. The cheapest GTX 285 from NewEgg is $299 (MSI; is that a decent brand?) and it's $50 MORE than the Sapphire 4890 Toxic and apparently it's SLOWER. Please give me a reason to buy the GTX 285. (ie. show me that it's truely faster than a 4890 Toxic/overclocked)

A overclocked 4890 beats a GTX 285, but not when the GTX 285 is overclocked. The 4890 stock competes with the GTX275 stock.

Hmmm, I really don't want a flame war.
__________________I know that the 4890 overclocked beats a 285 stock, but I keep hearing that an overclocked 285 beats an overclocked 4890 but I haven't seen any benchmarks/reviews confirming that. That's mostly what I'm after...

Read the link I just posted, a water cooled 285 loses to an air cooled 4890. Even Crysis for you nVidia fanboys.

In short, Stock 4890 < Stock 285 < OC'd 4890 < OC'd 285 However, the 285 is a decent amount more expensive, so you have to decide if the small performance boost is worth the cost.

whats wrong with the 4890 toxic? I mean, it has awesome cooling, its pretty much equal to a lightly ocd GTX285 and it costs >100$ less
I myself am looking for a excuse not to buy a toxic in the following seconds ... If I warn't to go to spain for a month next week I would be all over a 4890 Toxic right now but I figured why buy it now and let it all get dusty instead of buying it when I come back and maybe get it cheaper

The GTX 285 wins against the stock 4890, but OC'ed 4890 > Oc'ed 285.
__________________The Black edition 4890 was an oc'ed 4890, and the infinity was an oc'ed, water cooled, GTX 285. So, OC'ed 4890 > OC'ed 285. Also oc'ing isnt much of a feat for the 4890's. I have three reference cards running at 1ghz/1.2ghz, which is actually faster than the BE which was benchmarked there. And they are all blowing that heat ontop of each other while always stable.

HD 4890 = GTX 280
Now just work out the percentages of OC on each card, ie GTX 285 is just an oc'ed 280 and go from there. In the end of the day it's still going to be neck and neck. GTX 285 OC FTWBBQOMFGZOMFG edition might win win 4xaa or no AA on (for EX crysis) but with 2xAA+ HD 4890 Atomic+ w/e will win. Honestly just get the HD 4890 Toxic, its cheaper and even if you bother to switch later on the difference will be unnoticeable (unless you do several dozen FRAPs in game runs and check for fps deltas that are out of standard deviation). Actually, heres the best comparison I could find that I trust. ![]() ![]() [H] Powercolor HD 4890 Pcs+ review [H] MSI N285GTX SuperPipe OC So neck and neck ![]()
