Pretty easy decision for me.

If you fold or have money to burn : Nvidia

If your Performance/Cost ratio is an issue and you don't fold : ATI

XFX is a good brand to buy from because of their solid warranties. If you live outside the US I would recommend Palit as well, as I've never had a problem with their RMA service and like the coolers they include.
Thanks, thats what I wanted confirmation on I might go with sapphire, they look to have very good cooling fans - nice and quite, lol.

I dont have money to burn =P haha, but Iwill pay more for more quality.
What is 'folding' that everyone keeps saying?!
I would go nvidia, but ATI runs DDR5 chips, nvidia's dont, and the price for the I7 when its soon to be superseded, with no garuntee that the new intel chips will be backwards mobo compatible, AMD just seems a safer 'future' proofing option. While going AMD, may as well go with its partner and use ATI, haha.

I like the motherboard you selected, but if you can go i7 (which I know this isn't about, but there lies a point) then go i7. Reason I say that is because of versatility. Today you may want some nvidia cards, but tomorrow you may want ati, if you're fixed on running sli or cf and you wanna eventually make a switch; with the amd mobo you're gonna have to buy another board to support the opposite multi gpu platform. With the x58 chipset you can do either one, so you're not limited. Plus the i7 is gonna murder the AMD series on the win7 platform which will take advange of the hyperthreading. Just thought you should consider that. BTW, nvidia all the way. ATi drivers still, and may always stink. I know you are def building a gaming rig, because no one spends that much money on a folding rig; gpu wise. Esp when you can get 9800GX2s at a much cheaper price.

That post has made me rethink my entire structure >< ATI drivers suck? I didn't know that.
Also, the x58 chipset like you mentioned is very appealing as they all have at least 6 RAM slots. What you mention about versatility is exactly what I am aiming for.

I7 is expensive though for what you get, how overclockable is the I7?
The AMD chip WILL work with the x58 boards wont they? And the AMD chip is hyperthreaded isnt it? So whats the difference between the I7 and AMD hyperthreading when W7 is released? LOL, so many questions you've now unleashed =P haha, but thank you for bringing it up, I wanna make the right choice on this.

Why do people keep saying ATI drivers suck..? I've used ATI drivers for 1-2yrs now, and have not encountered 1 driver related issue. At release date some CF systems had some issues. All of that has been fixed for awhile now.
I7 is an option, but I'm avoiding that. I keep hearing things about how they won't be expanding the socket (which means new motherboard....new CPU..etc)
AM3 is going to be supported in the future from what I'm hearing. Get the MSI board someone mentioned with 4 pci-e.
I would also only buy 2 4890's, and if that is not enough performance for ya, just buy a third one. That way if 3 4890's is overkill, you will have had the chance to try only 2 without wasting money.
Same for a fan/heatsink for the video cards. Don't buy them until you've tried the stock. If your not happy, do some research and order the fans/heatsinks later. At least you've tried the stock, and KNOW your not happy with it.

The AMD will not work with an intel chipset (x58). ATI will, however.

I'd suggest i7 if you have the cash because, with the release of Seven and native support, more and more programs will support hyper threading. The i7 is very overclockable as long as you keep it cool, which would require a good CPU heatsink/fan combo, such as a Primaltech Megahelem, or TRUE, and some good fans like Scythe.

Also, though I'm biased... I'd say go for the 2 (or 3) 4890s.

Best 3X285s, Nvidia PWNs folding my 9600GSO out folds a 4870X2 but sli and crossfire do not scale well after 2 cards 2-way + 80% 3-way +40% so all about budget
