best for the money? GTX 260 or 4870 1GiB at the ~130-150 dollar price point. GTX275 or 4890 at ~180-200.

Fastest? GTX285.

Also not Dual pcb, or Dual Gpu.
he asked for single gpu. So not gtx295

I dont care if your a nvidia fan or ati.

The single most powerful gpu today is the gtx285.

I am a bit biased but you should chose an nvidia gpu. Besides being very powerful the gtx 275/285 will average 8k ppd in folding@home. The ATI is a great gpu as well but it's daily production is roughly 1/2 that of an nvidia.
