Default HD 4890 vs GTX 285 - The reviews - UPDATED, MORE RESULTS

This is getting silly so I've round up all the reviews and counted who won what

All the results are with BOTH cards at STOCK CLOCKS

The results are easy enough to explain, for a card to get a clear win over the other it must have a 5fps advantage over the other card in either MIN or AVG frame rate. If the cards are with-in 5fps of each other it's a Tie.

Hardware Canucks

Total Benchmarks : 57

4890 wins : 4

A Tie : 31

GTX 285 wins : 22

NOTE : Hardware Canucks reported bizarre driver related performance issues for the 4890 giving the GTX 285 more wins then it would normally get.

Link : http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...gb-review.html

Overclocks Club

Total Benchmarks : 28

4890 wins : 2

A Tie : 18

GTX 280 wins : 8

NOTE : As you may of noticed, it's a GTX 280 in this review and not a GTX 285

Link : http://www.overclockersclub.com/revi..._hd_4890/7.htm

Firing Squad

Total Benchmarks : 7

4890 wins : 0

A Tie : 6

GTX 285 wins : 1

Link : http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...view/page3.asp

AnandTech

Total Benchmarks : 18

4890 wins : 5

A Tie : 11

GTX 285 wins : 2

NOTE : GTX 285 got owned!

Link : http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3539&p=16

Results Total

Total Benchmarks : 110

Total 4890 wins : 11

Total Tie's : 66

Total GTX 280/285 wins : 33

As you can see, over the 55% of the time the 4890 is within a measly 5fps of the GTX 285/280.

Minus the excess wins for GTX 285 due to bad performing drivers on the 4890's part and the gap is even smaller.

So for all the Nvidia boys out there who say it doesn't compete can now eat your own words

Throw in a bit of over clocking and the 4890 out shines the GTX 285

GTX 285 gets bashed on too much i think, its a hell of a chip powerful as heck. Maybe a little pricey but id take nvidia drivers over ati ones any day. Just IMO no need to start a flame.

The general conclusion from reading though all the reviews was that the overclocked 4890s ( 950Mhz+ on the core ) actually leaped over the GTX 285

I'm not trying to start a flame, it's just getting stupid now with people claiming the 4890 is not in the GTX 285's league and yet its within 5fps of it over 50% of the time.

An overclocked GTX 285 will beat an overclocked HD4890. Although the difference between the two is negligible. 5 fps does not justify the costs difference of the 2. Too bad I bought my card before the 4890 was released. On the other hand, nvidia driver support is much better. The 4890 is a better buy for the budget conscious consumer

Didn't you just read in the above post that you are posting incorrect information?

Just before everyone starts talking about overclocking. I think it's clear that the GTX 285 is faster maybe not by much. Also pay attention to the minimum fps in benchmarks when the scores are very close.

Now about overclocking. All cards overclock different, some people add third party cooling to verclock way higher. Other volt mod and achieve insane overclocks, so you can't say ATI overclocks better or Nvidia overclocks better. So I think comparing cards are stock is the way to go. How far they overclock is always a bonus.

BTW good stuff you posted dude. I had seen many reviews and in most benchmarks the GTX will win but not by much. It does amaze me how close the GTX 275 is to the GTX 285 as well and is a lot cheaper. The 4890 goes head to head with the 275 and the benchmarks are almost exact.

Agreed! I only bought the GTX 285 because I prefer Nvidia's driver support.
