Default Photoshop CS4 and GPU

Gonna be upgrading my gf's computer and the main thing that she uses it for is photoshop. I am going to throwing in either a Phenom II tri-core or quad core (depending on the budget) since her motherboard has unoffical support and 4gb of DDR2 800. Shes tried photoshoping on my sig rig, and she likes the power :P

Now whats concerning me here is her video card. CS4 now supports the video cards. Now what I what I want to know is, how much does it affect it now? She has a... I think its a 7300 with 128mb of ram. It's one of them silent ones. But any case, she has been complaining that over time (like 1 hour) photoshop is lagging. Like when she has to select a chunk of the photo for manipulation. I havn't been really able to figure the cause. But shes due for a format and upgrade anyways. It's not ram, she doesn't use it up.

But what I figured is it might be the 128mb of ram might be killing it...

So what should I be looking for in a video card? Do I need more GPU power? More RAM? Or a balance of both?

I was thinking on the lines of this guy for budget, plus its still silent and still got 512mb
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=35...nufacture=ASUS

Or this one, more power and its got dual DVI incase she wants to go dual screen on big resoultion
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=31...nufacture=eVGA

Or should I bump it up in power more? What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Yep 7300GT... weak stuff compaired to now eh?

PS CS4 only takes advantage of cards with CUDA. That's nVidia cards series 8 and upwards. The 7300 makes no difference to PS. If you want a cheap option, get a 9400 or something and put that in; it should speed things up a fair bit. RAM shouldn't make too much of a difference here, but I could be mistaken.

The 8400GS should be enough; I'd say a 9600, but that website seems pretty expensive...

EDIT: Lol, I ran a 7300 LE for about 2 years... it served me well... until I wanted to play games

CUDA basically unloads some of the work from the processor. Initial reports put CUDA tech at boosting CS4 performance up to 7 times faster than a processor alone (with the right plugins).

Basically any of the effects you can pull off with photoshop are going to be sped up a tremendous amount. Think things like the filters you can apply.

Pretty sure it just really speeds up things like rotate, resizing, moving and cropping pictures. (Massive simplification obviously; I'm not that smart

ATI has Stream (their own version of CUDA), which was implemented into the latest version of Photoshop.

Quote:
Perhaps NVIDIA's bright feather-in-the-cap has been its marketing partnership with Adobe - when the CS4 software was released last month NVIDIA was definitely pushing the fact that its GPU would accelerate many of the programs including Photoshop and Premiere. It turns out that MOST of these applications with also be accelerated by ATI's stream computing because they were built around DirectX and OpenGL, not CUDA.

Sounds like ram though, if its over a period of time could she maybe be taxing her ram capacity?

id grab a 9800 GT it will defiantly be fast enough for photoshop for years to come. newegg.ca?

i suggest one of these, 9600GSO is best bang for buck

I would guess as is most things now adays, look for cards with higher SP's.
